Today we’d like to introduce you to Fred Scott.
Hi Fred, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As the story goes, my friend was a DJ and I used to design flyers for him using Photoshop and images I would get of the Internet. One night at one of his gigs, another friend came by and took photos. I liked one of the photos so much that I used out for one of the flyers. After that, I concluded that I should just take my own photos to alter in Photoshop. So I took up a home study photography course.
What happened was that the now I learned about photography, the more I appreciated the art of photography. I concentrated more on photographs being my main form of expression.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s never a smooth road, in my opinion. There’s the struggle to learn a new craft and a new language. There’s the struggle to find one’s identity. And then there is the struggle to grow.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been fascinated with the city at night so I mainly photograph the city at night. The city glows in a way that transform it into a different beast compared to the day. It’s mysterious and dark with colorful invitations scattered throughout.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Trust your instinct.
When I shoot, I shoot with intent. Something about the image compelled me to capture it. Yet sometimes I might not see it afterwards. It might be months in-between but I’ll come back and SEE the image, appreciating the beauty in it.
