Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Cavitt.
Hi Crystal, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I became interested in touch therapy after an extremely toxic relationship. I struggled with understanding and honoring boundaries and consent in my interpersonal relationships. I noticed an article, a few videos, and read a book on cuddling by Samantha Hess. I became enamored with the concept, but struggled to navigate becoming a professional cuddler, as a single mother. I lived in a scarcity mindset and was not very self aware. I was consumed by a victim mentality, grief, and resentment for my lot in life. Unaware that I was the only one holding myself back.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been many struggles along my path to building community in Pittsburgh. I had to first overcome my fear of safety and professionalism in an industry that is incredibly misunderstood. I had little expendable income, but decided that training and a professional space would help me feel more comfortable doing this work. I set out to Portland Oregon to complete Samantha Hess’s training course via her company Cuddle Up to Me. It was a week long training that felt more like a pilgrimage and taught me so much about myself, how to navigate cuddle poses, creating safety for myself and all those that dwell in my space. It taught me how to honor my boundaries and regulate my self care rituals and routines. The struggles did not stop there as I have had to work out of several spaces and continue my training in cuddling, martial arts, and self awareness. I have had to facilitate for groups of people, many with trauma and severe anxiety. I have had to learn to value myself, accept criticism, and practice the art of healthy conflict and observation with my clients and community members.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What sets me apart from others in my industry is my continued devotion to education and training. I am working towards a degree in psychology at the university of Pittsburgh. I have attained a blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do, and continue my practice of martial arts in Qi Gong. I am a student of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism. I continue to work to become better at what I can offer in terms of platonic touch and mindfulness. I have completed multiple facilitation certifications in Authentic Relating and Cuddling, via Authentic Revolution and Cuddle Sanctuary. I continue to train to complete a Cuddle Party Certification. I have also completed the Bidwell Training Center Certificate of Horticulture and plan to continue my education in Horticulture therapy. I believe that there are multiple avenues of healing and I am grateful to continue to heal alongside my clients. I am excited to offer acceptance for who you are right this very moment. I offer safe touch and presence. I offer the opportunity to be here… now. I offer mindfulness in the form of oxytocin. Ask me how.
