Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Chang.
Hi Chris , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a video journalist who believes video journalism should be as informative as it is entertaining. That’s what I’ve been striving for since I set foot in the media industry, telling stories about minorities, social movements, and history with lenses and animated graphics. Born and raised in Taiwan, I speak English, Mandarin, and French, and have used them to cover news all over the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a visual storyteller focusing on explanatory journalism, I always keep my senses open to keep creativity alive. I take inspiration from everything I consume – a podcast episode, a pop song, or a bus stop ad. However, getting inspired is one thing, but putting it into work is another. I have definitely experienced many creators’ blocks along the way, but I think what matters more is to learn from the great works and create a system to organize your thoughts and inspirations. Also, stay open to trying things that you’re unfamiliar or uncomfortable with because that’s usually how a creator evolves.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
It’s an interesting time to be a video journalist in the current digital landscape as many media outlets lean on various short-form videos to compete for attention. I’ve been experimenting with different ways to make news digestible by breaking down complex topics into a 60-second social video with a creative twist, using greenscreens, graphics, or animations. I like reading viewers’ comments about how they learn something new about government polices or interesting business practices because of my videos, but also how they appreciate the extra entertaining elements that I’ve put much effort into.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was one of your hard-working Asian kids who cared a lot about studies. HA! But I’ve always been a big fan of cinema and animation from a young age and pretty soon realized that holding cameras and working on various creative visual works would be my ultimate goal in the future.
