We were lucky to catch up with Kari Patsy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kari thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Kari’s Create and Paint (KCAP) began during a time of transition in my life. I spent eight years as a stay-at-home mom, pouring my heart into raising my kids while finding joy in painting as a creative outlet. As my youngest child was approaching kindergarten, I started feeling the pull to return to work. My background was in dentistry, so naturally, I explored that option. I even went for an interview at a dental office, but when I walked in, something didn’t feel right. It wasn’t where I was meant to be anymore. That night, I had a vivid dream about opening an art studio in Stillwater, a place where people could gather, create, and unwind.
The next morning, I shared my dream with my husband, and without hesitation, we started searching for a space for the studio. It felt like everything clicked into place. I didn’t have all the answers yet, but I knew in my gut this was the path I was meant to take.
I wanted to create a place where people could disconnect from the noise of daily life and reconnect with themselves and each other through art. The idea of having a welcoming space for anyone, regardless of skill level, to explore creativity was exciting. I was solving a need I saw in the community—a need for a place that wasn’t just about product, but about experience. Art is therapeutic, and I truly believe everyone should have the chance to express themselves.
What excited me most about the idea was the potential for KCAP to become a haven—a space where people could let go of stress, rediscover their creativity, and share that joy with others. I wanted to build something that wasn’t just a business, but a meaningful part of the community. And that’s exactly what KCAP has become.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My husband, Scott, and I have been married for 23 years. We have a 19-year-old daughter, a 16-year-old son, and two pet pigs—yes, they live in our house! Being a mother is my favorite thing. We spent eight years living in California, but when we were ready to start a family, we moved back home to Minnesota.
Painting has always been a hobby of mine. I’m naturally creative, and thinking outside the box comes easily to me. I embrace my quirkiness and find joy in bringing fun into everything I do. I’m faithful, I love people and all animals . Working with my hands is my passion—getting me to sit down and do computer work is a challenge!
Life is great!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We built KCAP little by little, funding it entirely on our own. My love for recycling—something that served me well as a stay-at-home mom—became especially useful when starting the studio. We furnished the space with carefully chosen secondhand treasures, making the most of what we could afford. Even our kiln was pre-loved, and 11 years later, she’s still going strong—now with a new kiln friend by her side, helping fire up countless hand-painted masterpieces!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Providing excellent customer service while embracing slow and steady growth has been key. We prioritize training our staff to genuinely care for our guests, ensuring everyone feels welcome and valued. Maintaining a high standard for the quality of our items is just as important—we want every piece to reflect the care and creativity that goes into it.
Honesty and authenticity have also played a huge role. Being transparent with our customers, staying true to who we are as artists and individuals, and creating a space that reflects those values have all helped build trust and a strong reputation.
