We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Peter Anthony a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Peter , thanks for joining us today. If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
Best investment was my first company. Always invest in the ONE THING you control. If you can build something by working longer and harder that is a strong investment. In my Case it was our first salon, based on the size of my personal clientel the numbers worked for me to open and still profit … We broke a million in our first 18 months in business. We did not do this because we were smart we did it because we wroked 2x as much as all our competitors so we were able to do 2x plus a bit of the business.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
every business ultimately comes down to NEEDS or WANTS. Do people Need what you are offering or do they want what you are offering. Marketing is something you would imagine people understood they needed, but ultimately marketing is something that you need to make people want.
Simply telling people their business will be better with it is never enough. When we started with Hair salons we studied WHY people spent luxury dollars vs average dollars. I went directly into the luxury space with the highest ticket in a suburban salon in the country.
When you do something so insane like “price yourself out” it creates a certain freedom. You can see ALL your competitors quickly and easily. Then the only portion of your marketing you need to discern is why they must have YOU and why your so exclusive. The price alone starts to tell a story and as long as you stay congruent to the story “head to toe” you will build.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Funding is a test, leaders are not the ones with the most resources they are the ones who are most resourceful. Like most businesses we started underfunded, this is actually your competetive advantage if you look at it correctly.
You immediately learn to do MORE with LESS. You are forced to make important decisions immediately and let go of distracting decisions.
We built a membership model in the first Salon we built before we opened the doors. We sold over 300 memberships and funded the entire project.
I have now helped 1000’s of businesses pivot, marketing, scale, systemize and grow. the ones that succeed 9 out 10 times are the ones who start with less, much less. Now that is not to say that starting with less is an advantage, it actually sucks. Most people who start with less will still fail a great number of times, it just has the “possibility” of being a super power. If you study your business model and become obsessed with others who have paved the road your walking on then starting with less is the bonus.
If you do not know your model better than anyone from an intimate level, you will lose, it is that simple. Knowledge is the key to success. Studying the business and obsessing over the details LONG before you open the doors, paint the walls and offer products or services is the only competetive advantage you can count on.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Strategically placing your work in front of the avatar you believe will work with you. Nothing is more important. As a marketing company we take specific premiere clients in niche markets and work on their business at a deeply discounted rate in order to start the momentum.
We make their success and their collateral VERY public. This is awesome for them and it showcases our work. We do it on a time frame (let’s say one year) and from their they will go into a standard contract after the initial launch.
With the Salons it was the same. Every Chanel makeup artist received everything we did for FREE, designer styles with my top master stylists (myself in the beginning) our best color artisans, our finest nail technicians. My only goal was to make them feel, look, and act incredible. We instilled confidence and elegance consistently and protected and poslished their personal brands.
