We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Petty Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Petty thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
What I have been working on is a documentary about my life and my comedy career and telling the truth about the entertainment industry from my perspective and showing the world on how to change the culture in not just entertainment but in our country as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been doing entertainment for the last 16 years and I have worked hard my entire life. To go through the last 16 years of my life and gritting and grinding my way to be at the top of my game and following the path the good Lord has provided. It’s all about Blood, Sweat & Respect because the first two you give, the last one you earned and whether people think it’s aspiring or controversial, the road to the top isn’t as easy as people think so you have to make sure that you surround yourself with like minded people because collaboration leads to celebration and I want people to know to fight for your dreams and watch your dreams fight for you.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
You can’t please everyone
Everyone ain’t your friend
Don’t Trust Anybody
The reason why those three are key is because everyone wants to get to the top and what this industry has done has created the crab in the barrel mentality that it’s origin comes from everyday life and social media doesn’t make it easier now because someone can hate you based off what someone else said and rumors and drama is created to where people don’t want to see you win, That comes from family, friends, other entertainers and it’s even playing field but some don’t want to see you do it before then and it’s sad because people like me are trying to open a door up for everyone because if one makes it we all make it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to learn from others who share the same vision and goal as yourself because they may have not gone through the same things as you to get where they’re at but everyone has a story and everyone has one that’s similar and being able to learn from them as advanced as I am is a true blessing because they’re exposing you to something that you worked so hard for because they believe in you and your talent as a comedian, podcast host, social influencer and be able to create opportunities for those who want to showcase their talents and actually want to grow. It’s very rewarding to inspire people because you’re inspired by them as well.
