We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Virginia Warwick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Virginia below.
Virginia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have been an artist my whole life. But I started considering the idea of taking my artistic endeavors more “seriously” by applying to graduate school. I put the word seriously in quotes, because still to this day, close to twenty years after entering graduate school I do not consider myself to be a serious artist, but a playful one.
I do take my dedication to my art serious, but my practice is indeed playful.
When presenting my portfolio to Maren Hassinger, the director of Rinehart School of Sculpture, at Maryland Institute College of Art she later commented on how I seemed so committed to my art portfolio that it convinced her to accept me into the program. The artwork was out of the ordinary, but I was committed to the presentation which helped my case.
With the support of my professors from Undergraduate school and Maren, I decided to pursue my artistic practice more in depth and professionally.
Virginia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been an artist my whole life. In my artistic discipline I make large scale art installations, sculptural wall hangings, costumes and even music and performance art.
In September of 2024 my band, Virginia Warwick Trio, was selected as one of the best experimental bands on Bandcamp. This music group that I am part of is an experimental improvised music group. We play some typical music shows, but also play in my art installations. One notable art installation I created is entitled “Aquatic Womb”
The installation, “Aquatic Womb” has been presented in two spaces in Baltimore, Md. One at an alternative space and at another art gallery space. In both iterations my band, Virginia Warwick Trio, performed inside the space in front of an audience. Members of the band wore jelly fish head dresses and I wore an aquatic like coral reef ensemble.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I find it extremely rewarding to spread inspiration and receive inspiration as an artist.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have a goal of sustaining myself financially with my artistic practice with the support of grants and being shown in more galleries and museums.
