We recently connected with Carolina Hidalgo Bascur and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina, thanks for joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Since I can remember, I’ve always loved drawing. As a child, I spent a lot of time sick at home and would draw characters, changing their outfits and hairstyles. When it was time to go to college, I decided to pursue a scientific path for financial reasons. In Chile, being an artist wasn’t well respected or well-paid, and university tuition for these careers was very expensive, so I chose to study engineering. However, I never felt motivated or happy in that field. For around 12 years, I explored different areas of science, trying to find something I was passionate about that could also be financially viable.
In 2018, I made the decision to move to New York, where I found myself doing jobs I never imagined, such as waiting tables, bartending, working as a barista, a hairdresser, a teacher, and even babysitting. None of these roles truly fulfilled me. It wasn’t until 2022 that I decided to give art another chance. I went to an art supply store, bought my first sketchbook and pencils, all with the intention of becoming a tattoo artist one day.
The first year was mostly about practicing drawing on paper and my iPad for fun, and tattooing my own legs. In 2023, I tattooed my first client and began tattooing 1-2 times a month while still supplementing my income with babysitting. By 2024, my reputation grew, and more people started recommending me to their friends. During the summer, I decided it was time to fully dedicate myself to tattooing, so I quit babysitting. This July will mark one year of exclusively living off my art, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made.
The confidence and knowledge I have now go hand in hand, but both come with practice and experience. Looking back, I believe each step, no matter how long it took, was necessary for my growth as an artist. While there are things I could have done differently, such as perhaps seeking more mentorship or guidance earlier on, I believe the journey has been invaluable in shaping who I am today. Every challenge and experience has played a crucial role in building the skills and confidence I now possess.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a Latinx tattoo artist specializing in anime, kawaii, and fine line styles. I’ve always been drawn to cute, delicate designs with a touch of sparkle, and this aesthetic has heavily influenced my work. My tattoos are intricate, with a strong emphasis on detail, often inspired by the nostalgia of classic cartoons and anime from my childhood.
What sets me apart is my ability to merge both nostalgic and modern elements into pieces that resonate with people’s personal stories and memories. I pride myself on offering a safe and inclusive space where everyone, regardless of their body type or background, feels welcomed and respected.
I’m most proud of creating a space where clients can express themselves freely through art while feeling understood and valued. My work isn’t just about the tattoo itself; it’s about the connection I build with my clients and the empowerment they feel through their chosen designs.
Above all, I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know that my brand is centered on authenticity, inclusivity, and attention to detail. I aim to create tattoos that aren’t just designs, but meaningful experiences for everyone I work with.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I believe the best way to build an audience on social media is by engaging with the community you’re targeting. Yes, social media is about showcasing yourself, but it’s important to present it in a way that makes your audience feel connected and involved in what you do.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I believe the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to share with my clients how I see the world and how I feel. I’ve always been a positive person who strives to find beauty in everything, and I believe my art reflects this perspective.
