We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mireille Noel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mireille thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I definitely would have started sharing my songs earlier if I could go back in time. I’ve always loved melodies and have been writing songs since I was 13. Now that I’m in my mid-thirties, I sometimes grieve the years I missed out on sharing my music with the world.
Although I’ve always had the desire to share my work, I constantly questioned whether I was good enough. Instead of pursuing music seriously, I focused on building a practical career, which served me in that time. I thought that I needed a large fan base, industry connections, or a big budget to get started.
Everything changed in 2016 when I attended a few local open mic nights. Witnessing other artists share their art showed me that music didn’t have to be about making it big. It could simply be about sharing, connecting, and growing as an artist. That year, I set a goal to perform at one open mic a month. Little by little, those performances gave me the confidence to record and release my first song.
Since then, I’ve continued sharing my music and have released several singles and an EP. I still wonder how things might have been different if I had started earlier. I have learned from that time of not sharing, that it’s okay to learn as I go and that no one starts off perfectly. I am learning not to count myself out and that it’s never too late to start.
Mireille, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a singer-songwriter who creates what I like to call “soul care music”; songs that center around my journey with God and reflection. My music blends devotional worship with contemporary, gospel, and indie influences. I credit my love of music to my family, childhood church, and culture as a Haitian American.
As a worship songwriter, I don’t quite fit neatly into the mainstream Gospel or Contemporary Christian music genres but I still think my songs will connect with the people who need them. I would like my songs to inspire listeners to pursue intimacy with God while providing the space to help process life’s seasons. It’s an invitation to slow down, reflect, and embrace friendship with God.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey has evolved from trying to make music that will CHANGE THE WORLD to simply creating music that I enjoy, with the hope that it will bless those who encounter it. My current goals include completing a project on grief, making more music with my friends, and learning an instrument. Ultimately, I just want to keep getting better at my craft and add more beauty to the world.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the joy of bringing something to life from scratch and sharing it with my community. As I’ve shifted my focus away from the outcome, I’ve felt more free to create simply for the joy of it.
