We recently connected with Miles Holland II and have shared our conversation below.
Miles , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
My first gig was an Easter event at a brewery for children and families. I was still new to working with my audio equipment and had never done a gig with strictly clean music. I was nervous, but once the music started playing and people warmed up to the music all my worries went away. I did so well the Brewery brought me on a resident DJ after that.
Miles , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am 34 year old open format DJ based in Los Angeles with experience doing clubs, private events, weddings and various events for over 5 years.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to blend different genres and eras of music seamlessly. I am able to adapt and play music to suit any clients preferences.
Before my father passed in 2021 he challenged me to take my dj career as far as possible. Since then I’ve obtained a number of residencies, performed at various popular venues/parties, DJ’’d for brands like Nike, and traveled the world DJ’ing. Knowing I have kept my word to him makes me the most proud.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I spent my first few years DJ’ing wherever I could for minimal pay or for free. Working in spaces like dive bars or restaurants naturally led me to begin being discovered by others. Feeling frustrated and undervalued, I was approached by an event coordinator on a slow night at the Mandrake(my first residency) and asked to DJ the Shay Hotel’s (Marriott affiliate) New Year’s event. Things went so well I went onto become a resident DJ there from late 2022-2024.
In the past I’ve checked out on personal endeavors when I felt undervalued or hopeless, but with DJ’ing I’ve adopted the mindset of not giving up and being patient for the right opportunities.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I work in mental health and it can be very demanding and stressful in a number of ways. My first love basketball eventually became too difficult and taxing on my body to keep up with as I got older. When I started DJ’ing it gave me an outlet of outside of my 9-5 to have fun and pick up something new to be invested in. As i got more skilled and booked more,I realized this hobby could also become a roll source of additional income. Making people happy though music and getting paid for it has always been a win in my eyes.
