We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darryl Dunn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darryl below.
Darryl, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on was the “Unseen Artists” project. My vision was to bring the beauty and diversity of Black Art directly to the public. With the help of Maria Williams founder of “In Eye of the Beholder “ Gallery and Studio and the “Art of Four initiative “ and Centro San Antonio, my vision came to life. I constructed 10 7 ft benches and chose artist to adorn murals them. I happy to say that the San Antonio airport made a home for them. I like to think that every one who has flown into San Antonio has either seen or sat on our work, which was my goal.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For starters, I am a woodworker and mixed media artist. I create furniture and art from salvaged or recycled materials. Influenced by mid century modern style but with my own style. My artwork has leaned towards the African American culture and experiences. I have a need to create and the work I do for my clients are more of a collaboration. I feel you don’t need to be wealthy to have a one of a kind piece. Whether they are a private collector or a business. I’m take great pride in my craft and my clients know my work will last them many years.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I am currently in a pivoting phase in my life. Artistically and creatively speaking, I want to share my voice and thoughts through my woodwork. I feel it’s a crucial time for expression, at the same time create furniture pieces that substantial pieces of art. However, I believe my calling is artist advocacy. I enjoy supporting artists as much as creating art. My oldest daughter Marli is a fantastic artist, and I’m so excited in her potential. She motivates me to find a way where artist can create a viable career through their art.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is simply creating. I’ve been blessed with a vivid imagination. I’m constantly writing ideas down on what scrap of paper, cardboard or block of wood I can find. The satisfaction of bringing a vision to life is an incredible feeling. When someone wants to by that piece, I feel validation and I know I’m on the right path.
