We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daniel Hightower. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daniel below.
Daniel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned to do what I’m doing by trial and error, there’s no one way to do one thing. Around 2015 I started painting, and I started building my skills by watching YouTube videos and reading books. The most I learned was from a professor in college. Once I got to college, I met a professor by the name of Robert Williams. He broke down the art of painting, to me.
The skills I think are most essential are rough drafts, base sketching, and writing out intentionally what you’re trying to do—it’s tough to build something beautiful if you don’t have a foundation.
The only obstacle that stood in the way of learning more, is myself. Being consistent, not being prideful, asking questions, and addressing yourself is essential to being a great artist. Don’t be afraid to get help, there’s no such thing as cheating when it comes to art.
Daniel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The services I provide are custom apparel, footwear, canvas paintings, murals, poster prints, and illustrations of various mediums. All things art and creativity—I provide.
I am most proud of the ability to inspire people. For example, my daughter. To have my daughter look up to me and say “Daddy, I want to be an artist like you when I grow up” means the world to me. The ability to lead with God first, and impact, that’s what I am most proud of. When things are all said and done, the impact will live on forever.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think society could just love each other, more. We’re all different, but we’re all the same. If people were more accepting to things they didn’t understand, art would thrive more—people would be happier, and we could unite and build better together. Art unifies.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I am building my audience on social media by trusting God, first. All of these talents come from God. I think it’s best to embrace these gifts, these talents—and share them with the world.
My advice to those starting to build, don’t be afraid, don’t walk in fear and stay the course. Trust your journey, trust the skills equipped within you and trust God to direct your path.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
