Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nnamdi Ngwe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nnamdi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I think the most meaningful project I have worked on so far is Tab Time. This is a children’s show lead by our Emmy Award winning host, Tabitha Brown.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work in comedy for years as a writer and performer, but writing on a kids show was not initially on my radar. When the possibility of working in the kids space came about, I realized that I could use my humor and lessons I’ve learned over the years to inspire and promote positive change, and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing.
It’s very cool to write for a show that is seen by many and provides a fresh new approach to kids TV. The show has also won awards which has been a nice cherry on top of it all!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The first agent I met with told me that I’m not “urban enough” to work in the industry, The second agent turned me down because they already had a black guy like me. I could have let those “no’s” discourage me but I wanted to act and write so I signed up for improv classes and on camera classes and soaked up as much as I could.
I eventually got into local shows as an actor and started writing more. I wrote, produced, and starred in a show with my twin brother Amechi and it was well received. We won awards at a number of festivals and got write ups in the newspapers and that got the attention of agents who reached out and signed us.
After getting with an agent, I have been lucky enough to perform globally, guest star and write on a number of different shows and I am loving it!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is using humor to educate! In my work in live performances, videos, and tv shows, I get to explain things as simple as 2+2=4 to economic policies but make sure I sprinkle in jokes throughout for entertainment and engagement. I like to bring my own brand of fun to everything I do, and it’s nice to hear positive feedback directly from audience whether it be a laugh on stage or a message online.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is different for everyone. For me, it has been a lot of work. I had to watch a lot of things I like on different platforms and then remind myself to do things I enjoy. One of the traps I saw a lot are people falling into was giving too much time and energy to social media and then becoming exhausted physically and mentally. I feel it’s important to find a balance that works for you so I try to be present, have fun interactions, and limit myself in how much I scroll. I feel it helps me so I can focus on other personal or professional things I want to do!
