We recently connected with Kenneth Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Kenneth , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
When I opened my private practice in a town in which i knew noone prior i made it a practice of meeting all the other small store oners in my town and letting them know i was a new chiropractor in town. I joined several local business groups which focused on networking . In addition i gave out at lest 3 busnisss cards to anyone i met form local bank , business or store i frequented regularly. I was not shy letting others know who i was or what i did and the type of services i had to offer them.
Kenneth , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Prior to becoming a chiropractor I was a teacher in a junior high school.I had already obtained a B.A. in psychology and M.S. in education . My wife injured her lower back while we were traveling and I took her to a local chiropractor.. I had to almost carry her into his office and after just one visit she was able to walk out on her own ! The next day we went back for a check up and while sitting in the office waiting room I picked up a brochure explaining the basis of what chiropractic and its principles etc. After reading it i had an epiphany that this is what I should study and pursue as a new career.. I took a leave of absence from my teaching job and enrolled in chiropractic college upon returning home from our vacation. What excited me most was the fact that chiropractic was not just a treatment for back or neck problems but dealt with removing interference of the nervous system which in turn could effect health in general and all body systems.. .When i opened my practice I gave weekly information lectures explaining the principles of chiropractic to all my new patients and soon afterwards had a busy practice as they would bring in their entire families to me for care once they understood that chiropractic was not just a treatment for illness but more importantly could be used on a preventative basis and keep them healthy and prevent illness I soon had a cradle to grave or womb to tomb family practice. I practiced for 45 years and treated thousands of patients and had four generations of patients.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Training and knowledge although both necessary patients want to know if you care about them and have their best interests in the doctor patient relationship. I put their concerns first and was available 24/7 if they needed me or my services. I made many a house call and hospital visits if necessary to adjust them. I considered my practice members as family not just customers and they knew I was sincere and had their well being as my top priority.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I believe that the single most effective way to grow my practice was ongoing patient education. I invited all my new patients to attend a weekly spinal care class at which time I taught them about self help care practices and the overall principles of natural healing and chiropractic . I established the mind -body education center and had a variety of practitioners teaching other natural healing approaches in my office form nutrition to meditation , yoga etc. .
