We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tan Kitapli. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tan below.
Tan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Especially in art, there are certain areas that you can’t rush. Such as the birth of a new script, or the perfect cut. Sometimes we try to force ideas out of our head and enter a writer’s block. In my experience, I have learned that this is not a block, but rather a demand for time. Ideas spawn from experiences and observations. If we do not take the time to allow the idea to brew in our minds, however long this may take, it usually results into forced ideas that feel rushed and illegitimate to your vision and voice.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Turkish-Dutch filmmaker that first began my journey through theatre which resulted in screenwriting, and then working the camera and the vast world behind it. The arts are heavily celebrated in Turkey, and I was really fortunate to have as much exposure as I did growing up. I always felt interested in forms of expression, and film was the ultimate medium for me.
I now offer a range of services from aspects of pre-production planning, production know-how and post-production services. I also provide photography services. This is what makes me stand out as a filmmaker, I truly believe in being a jack-of-all-trades, gaining expertise in all areas in order to round out my skills. My biggest strength is my problem solving capability, there’s no problem that can’t be fixed with the right people and resources.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
It is the drive to own and operate a multi-national production company. A group of incredibly capable individuals that spend their time creating and traveling. Each country and continent presents a new challenge, and I believe in working as a global citizen. It’s all I’ve known my entire life, and I’d like to incorporate this ideology into a business.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I wanted to become an actor for the longest time when I was growing up. However, I wasn’t able to realize much success, even though it was something I was very passionate about. I still wanted to be around that world, and this led to me exploring the realm of film as my future. I fell in love with another profession that was less competitive. Through this method, I was able to remain close to my
acting dream whilst preparing myself for the endless opportunities in the film business.
