We recently connected with LaMya Singh and have shared our conversation below.
Hi LaMya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
It all started at The Beauty Institute in 2022. My instructor asked the question: “What made you want to come to school?” I told my instructor I envisioned opening my own spa with my youngest daughter one day. I knew that that would be a large step, so I decided to take baby steps. I decided to open my own an at-home spa. The main steps in this venture was renovating my basement into a place where women could go and find a safe haven. So, I decided to ask my husband and my brother to help me renovate it. Step by step we put down new floor tiles, painted the ceilings a mint green, the walls a blush pink, and the doors and trimmings a golden hue. I hung up floral decor and placed plants into my new studio. I purchased all of the equipment. And just like that, I was the owner of an at-home spa. There were key challenges, the biggest one being getting traffic and having a steady flow of customers. What I would have done differently to overcome this was better advertisement. When you run your own business, you make as much as you invest in it. That is my best advice to anyone considering starting their own practice.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Lamya Singh and I’m 45 years old. I started my journey as an aesthetician 3 years ago. I worked as a certified nursing assistant for over 20 years, so my love for taking care of people started a long time ago. I first gained interest in being an aesthetician because of my youngest daughter. She struggled with her skin since she was a teenager and I wanted to help her. She had an interest in skincare and it caused me to gain an interest as well. The services I provide are microneedling, nano needling, chemical peels and more. The problems I solve for clients include hyperpigmentation ,also known as dark spots, clearing up acne, helping coordinate a skin routine, while some clients just come in for relaxation. I think what sets me apart from others is I genuinely believe in creating an environment of peace and a healthy form of escapism while healing. I also provide upper body massages with every service to ensure a relaxing experience. I am most proud of my drive to keep going. I’ve stayed consistent and have been doing everything in my power to master my practice. I’m currently in school for acne specialists. I am proud of not giving up and knowing there is always room for growth.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back, I would choose the same profession. I have a love for healing people and a deep passion for my profession. I’ve found fulfillment in helping clients get beautiful skin and newfound confidence. I believe that every woman should be able to go makeup free and feel just as confident as they do with it, without it.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Consistency, consistency, consistency. Everyday I engage with my followers, whether it’s snippets from my personal life or professional. I believe in showing your personality online to create authenticity. I have also attended beauty conventions, and through that I’ve met business owners who I’ve created successful collaborations with that was fundamental in growing my clientele. I have also collaborated with content creators that introduced me to many opportunities.
