We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ron Fisher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ron below.
Ron , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
I believe that we have to invest in people. That includes our customers of course, but also our employees and their families.
My goal is to provide the best service to my customers that they can get. They know what they are getting when they come to me – and we do our best to give them amazing service that is fast, clear, and efficient.
And I know how important it is to nurture and care for a solid team that supports each other. I can’t do this alone. And I believe it is short-sighted when business owners prioritize short-term profit over long-term stability for the team. When the folks in my office are valued and cared for, we all work better together. And that is always better for the customer.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In business and in my personal life I am endlessly curious about how to make things better.
I started Fisher Signs & Shirts 10 years ago when I saw an opening in the market. I knew I could provide better service and better-quality products. So, I opened up shop, made mistakes, learned from them, and got better at what I did everyday.
I continue to strive for that with every customer because I know that without that commitment, we lose their trust. And I know that trust, while hard-earned, is easily lost.
Through the last 10 years we’ve expanded our offerings, our staff, and our footprint. We service local businesses in Long Island and also ship our products worldwide. From signs to apparel to vehicle wraps to custom lasering, we provide unique branding solutions and personalized gifts.
I grew up on Long Island and I have lived here my entire life (apart from a brief stint in California). My curiosity has taken to me to all parts of the world. But I am at home in Long Island because my people are in Long Island.
My friends, family, and business associates all mean a lot to me. I love helping people figure out how to use their unique skills to succeed. And I love what they bring to me.
My community and nonprofit work has been fulfilling in ways I could have never imagined. Being on the boards of Sepa Mujer and The Butterfly Effect Project has taught me more about how I want to show up in the world not just as a business leader, but as a human.
And I love helping other small business owners. My idea faucet never turns off and when I get excited to help others think through problems, solutions, and opportunities for growth.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Trust. I provide fast, quality service and am always clear with folks. That develops trust and that brings people back. When people come back others notice.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I can’t solve everyone’s problems. As a business owner I’ve had to get good at solving a never-ending wave of problems — and to be honest, I love it!
Every day provides new challenges and I’m good at finding solutions. And because I’m good at solving problems, it’s easy for me to want to solve everyone’s problems. But it turns out (much to my chagrin!) I’m not a superhero!
I’ve learned that in order for us to grow individually, we have to do our own work. And instead of solving problems for other people, I’ve become better and better at providing the support they need to succeed on their own.
As a boss, it’s my responsibility to provide an environment that is conducive for my team to find solutions and I take that very seriously because their success is important to me.
But stepping back and giving folks the opportunity to find growth in their mistakes has been beautiful and rewarding.
