Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Courtney Boomer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Courtney, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
When people look at my business today, they see a strong team, growing revenue, and consistent client results—but what they don’t see is the messy middle that got us here.
Back in 2020, I made the wild decision to invest my husband’s first paycheck after a 6-month income break (with a 2-month-old in my arms) to get certified as a Director of Operations. We were coming out of the thick of COVID, with no margin for error, but I knew this was the next right step. I had no business “betting on myself” with such high stakes—but I did anyway.
My husband and I had traveled the country in a camper before settling in South Carolina in 2018, where we helped plant a church. That season grew me in ways I didn’t expect—not just spiritually, but in how I showed up for my family and my work. In 2021, with a growing family (4 kids under 6 now!) and a dream of building something that gave us true freedom, I got laser-focused on systems, strategy, and scalability. I was managing the backend of our own concrete coatings company and helping it grow steadily while starting to attract more service-based clients asking for help.
The turning point was when I realized most small business owners—especially in the home service and trades world—were absolutely incredible at their craft but were drowning in the backend. They had no systems, no follow-up processes, and were leaving leads, money, and time on the table.
So I built ScaleUp.
But scaling wasn’t just about revenue. I had to learn how to lead a team, delegate (hard for a recovering control freak), create repeatable systems, and deliver high-level results without sacrificing my life in the process. There were seasons where growth felt like chaos. I had to pause, simplify, and come back to what mattered.
The real strategy that scaled us?
Getting hyper clear on who we serve and why
Offering holistic, done-for-you backend systems that actually moved the needle
Building out a strong service model that included both people (team) and platform (tools like GHL, ClickUp, Zapier, etc.)
Choosing sustainable, recurring revenue offers over custom one-offs
Constantly improving and streamlining, but never overcomplicating
Now, I help home service business owners do the same thing—build businesses that don’t require them to work 60 hours a week or be glued to their phones.
ScaleUp didn’t blow up overnight. It was built in the early mornings, during nap time, and between homeschool lessons. It was grown with intention, faith, a laptop, and a whole lot of Google Sheets.
And now, we’re just getting started.
Courtney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got started in this industry in kind of an unexpected way—after graduating with a double major in IT and Entrepreneurship, I jumped into the corporate world but quickly realized that clocking in and out wasn’t for me. Six months later, I quit, launched my own virtual assistant business, and never looked back.
Over the years, I leaned into my natural strengths—strategy, systems, and operations—and became a Certified Director of Operations in 2020. Since then, I’ve helped businesses across the country, especially in home service and trade industries, simplify and scale without the burnout.
I specialize in creating done-for-you systems that actually make sense for small businesses. From marketing foundations like SEO, Google Ads, and social media strategy, to backend automations, CRM builds, and tech support—I do it all with one goal in mind: help business owners get out of the weeds and back to what they do best.
What sets me apart? I’ve lived this. I’ve installed floors myself. I’ve built our coatings business from the backend up. I’m not guessing at what might work—I’m teaching what I’ve done to keep our own calendar booked 2–8 weeks out for 18 months straight.
I work with businesses who are great at their craft but overwhelmed by everything else. They’re in the field, juggling it all, and wondering if they’ll ever feel caught up. I help them turn their scattered backend into a well-oiled machine so they can focus on serving customers, making money, and actually enjoying their life.
What I’m most proud of is the way I’ve built my businesses around my life, not the other way around. I homeschool four kids, run multiple businesses, and still take four weeks off every year. I want other business owners—especially in the trades—to know that this kind of sustainable success is possible for them, too.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Honestly? 80% of my clients have come straight from Facebook groups. I didn’t run ads, I didn’t have a huge following—I just showed up where my ideal people were hanging out.
I’m active in software-specific groups (like for CRMs and marketing tools) and home service industry groups because that’s who I serve. But here’s the key: I never go in to sell. I answer their questions, offer real insight, and give away “insider” info that most people gatekeep.
I’ve learned that people don’t want to be pitched—they want to feel understood. So I focus on being helpful and solving problems. When they’re ready, they reach out. That’s how I’ve built a loyal client base and continue to get referrals without being “salesy.”
My advice if you’re starting out:
Be consistent
Be helpful
Show up as a real human
And don’t be afraid to give away value. It builds trust way faster than any pitch.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
After college, I went the ‘safe’ route—got a corporate job, did everything right, but six months in, I knew it wasn’t for me. I walked away without a backup plan. I started working virtually before most people even knew what that meant. That decision led to years of building skills, working with clients, and learning the backend of businesses.
But the real pivot came in 2020. My husband’s business had just launched, we were fresh into parenthood, and the world shut down. He didn’t get paid for six months, and I was home with a newborn wondering, “What now?”
Instead of panicking, I invested his first paycheck into a certification as a Director of Operations. That one move—when things were uncertain, when we barely had income—completely changed our trajectory.
Since then, we’ve scaled two businesses, I’ve built a team, and we’ve doubled revenue year over year—all while homeschooling four kids and living a life that feels aligned.
That pivot wasn’t just about survival—it was about setting a new standard for what’s possible when you combine strategy, systems, and a whole lot of grit.
