We recently connected with Brandon Holley and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Being an artist and creative gives me the ultimate freedom that I personally thrive off of to enjoy life. In high school and community college I had a couple jobs that I enjoyed but I knew I wasn’t going to be working in surf shops my entire life. Once I moved to Los Angeles, CA at 19 years old, I perused my music career full time and that’s where I felt my purpose in life begin. I lived a dream and nothing short of that. After touring for almost 10 years straight I thought to myself that it was time to slow down and begin a more regular lifestyle. I began my search for a 9-5 job to start a new career and that was a horrible mistake. I was lucky enough to find a good paying job in an industry that I was into but that’s also when all hell broke lose. Waking up Monday through Friday fighting through an hour of traffic just to sit at a desk and get yelled at constantly to work harder was not my ideal lifestyle I was looking for. This job drained my creativity and I stopped making music for the first time since I was in high school. I quickly became an alcoholic to cope with escaping from the day to day life of sitting at a desk Monday through Friday. In my eyes, a salary is just another way of someone else saying “hey, forget about your dreams and come help make my dreams come true.” I kept that job for only a few years and I snapped right back to the person who I truly am shortly after. I was never meant to be caged in a cubicle and take orders from someone and I am so happy I made it out of that lifestyle alive.
Brandon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a music producer/ DJ currently living in Huntington Beach, CA. Music was always a big part of my life growing up and I am so lucky to be able to continue to make music that I love. I started out playing bass/ guitar in multiple bands which eventually lead me to producing EDM/ Hip-Hop music. I met Sky Blu from LMFAO through mutual friends and thats when my music career really took off. Sky taught me so much about the music world and I wouldn’t be where I am at today without him in my life. I love making music and continue to make music weekly. I put out a single every month and typically 1-2 albums a year. My goal is to continue doing what I love and until I lose that fire, I will keep doing what I love.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Being a full time musician is really tough. Revenue from streaming sites isn’t nearly the same as selling albums back in the day. If you love an artist and want to support them, buy their merchandise, go to their shows, and support them any way you can. I’ve seen a lot of amazing musicians give up over the years simply because they couldn’t live of off their earnings.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me personally getting to wake up and create is a dream come true. I constantly have ideas flowing through my brain and when you are stuck at a desk Monday- Friday, you don’t always get those ideas down in a song or whatever you are working on. Now that I have the freedom to do what I want every day of the week, I feel beyond blessed. I am extremely lucky where I am in life and to be able to create whatever my brain wants to put out there every day.
