Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alina Shimova. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on has been my latest series, New Totems.
This series has been a breakthrough for me in multiple ways—stylistically, conceptually, and career-wise. It represents the moment where everything aligned: my artistic voice, my technique, and my vision of what I want to say through my work.
With New Totems, I’ve explored the intersection of mythology, human archetypes, and the animal kingdom in a way I had never done before. I’ve always been fascinated by the connection between humans and animals—not just as subjects of admiration, but as mirrors of ourselves, reflecting our strengths, instincts, and emotions. The series is deeply personal, drawing from my experiences, travels, and cultural influences. It’s also the first time I fully embraced my signature black-and-gold palette, which has become an essential part of my artistic identity.
Beyond just personal growth, New Totems has marked a major step in my career. The series debuted at Art Basel Miami Week, one of the most important art events in the world, and is now being exhibited during Frieze Los Angeles 2025 in collaboration with MASH Gallery and the Pacific Design Center. Several pieces have already been acquired by collectors, and the response has been incredible, reinforcing that the themes I’m exploring resonate on a deeper level.
This series has made me realize the power of my work to spark conversations—about nature, spirituality, and the way we define ourselves in relation to the world. That, for me, is the most meaningful achievement of all.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who may not be familiar with my work, I’m Alina Shimova, a contemporary figurative painter originally from Russia, now based in Miami. My art combines classical techniques with modern symbolism, spirituality, and pop culture influences, creating a distinct style that explores the deep connection between humans and the animal world.
I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember, but my artistic journey really took shape when I started blending traditional skills with my own symbolic storytelling. Over the years, I’ve experimented with different styles, but New Totems—my latest series—feels like a breakthrough for me. It’s a mix of everything I’ve worked toward: a refined technique, a unique concept, and a clear artistic voice.
At its core, my work reimagines the animal kingdom as a reflection of human nature—our strengths, struggles, and transformations. Animals aren’t just subjects in my paintings; they represent something bigger. Through my signature black-and-gold palette, I aim to create a sense of mystery and elegance, making each piece feel both timeless and modern.
I’m proud of how far my work has come and the recognition it has gained. I’ve already exhibited internationally, including at events during Art Basel Miami and Frieze Los Angeles 2025, and my pieces have found homes with collectors from different countries!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes — my creative journey is deeply connected to my passion for wildlife and nature conservation. I believe that art can inspire, raise awareness, and bridge the natural and human worlds. Through my work, I aim to honor the beauty and spirit of animals, reminding people of the profound connection we share with nature.
As a co-founder and former Vice President of the Union of Animalistic Artists back in Russia, I’ve always sought to bring together artists and advocates who care about the environment. I also actively support global conservation organizations and try to dedicate a portion of my art sales to these causes.
Looking ahead, I hope to collaborate with organizations like WWF, Greenpeace, and 1% for the Planet, using my art as a platform to contribute to these important missions. This purpose gives me direction and makes each piece I create part of something bigger.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part of being an artist is seeing how my work connects with people on an emotional level. When someone tells me that a piece resonated with them, inspired them, or made them feel something powerful — that’s the best feeling.
I also love the creative process itself. The moment when an idea transforms into something real on canvas — especially when I challenge myself and discover something new — it’s incredibly fulfilling.
And finally, knowing that my art can contribute to something bigger, makes this journey even more meaningful.
