We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dessaray Seay. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dessaray below.
Alright, Dessaray thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is the Confident & Creative Girls Club because it was born out of my own journey of resilience and the desire to create a safe space for young girls to grow into their most confident selves.
The idea started from a personal place—when I was younger, I struggled with self-worth and lacked the nurturing environment I needed to fully embrace who I was. As I got older, I realized how many young girls face similar challenges, especially those growing up in underserved communities where confidence and creativity often take a backseat to survival. I wanted to change that narrative.
I launched the Confident & Creative Girls Club to empower girls to be confident, courageous, and creative through arts, entrepreneurship, and mentorship. We use hands-on activities, affirmations, and real-world skills to show girls that their ideas, voices, and creativity matter. Watching these girls step into their power, speak up, and believe in themselves has been life-changing.
What makes this project so meaningful to me is knowing that I’m creating the support system I wish I had growing up. Seeing the impact—girls gaining confidence, mothers bonding with their daughters, and entire families shifting their mindsets—reminds me that this work is bigger than me. It’s about building a legacy of empowered young women who know their worth and aren’t afraid to take up space.

Dessaray, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey started in 2018 during a really tough time—I was struggling with postpartum depression and felt completely lost. In the middle of it all, I started making hair bows for my daughters. At first, it was just something small, a creative outlet to help me feel like myself again. But then, other moms and daughters started noticing and loving them too, and I realized this was more than just a hobby. It was the start of something bigger.
Bow-Aholic Bowtique has grown into more than just bows—it’s about building confidence, creating community, and giving moms and daughters a space to bond. Along with handmade hair accessories, we offer empowering apparel with uplifting messages and special experiences designed to bring families together. One of my favorites is Sunday Funday: The Club, where moms and daughters can unplug, connect, and just have fun. Through my research, I found that people are craving real connection and community, and I wanted to create a space where they can truly feel supported.
As I kept growing the business, I realized that young girls needed even more than just cute accessories—they needed a space where they could develop confidence, find their voice, and see their own potential. That’s why I started the Confident & Creative Girls Club. This program is all about helping girls feel bold, capable, and ready to take on the world through creativity, mentorship, and even a little entrepreneurship. For older girls, we offer Entrepreneur-in-Training and part-time job programs to help them build skills, earn money, and step into leadership roles.
What makes my brand different? It’s not just about selling products—it’s about creating experiences that truly make an impact. Every bow, every shirt, every event is designed with intention. I want girls to walk away feeling stronger, braver, and ready to take up space.
The best part of all this? Seeing the change happen. When a mom tells me her daughter has started speaking up more, or a girl walks into a room with her head held high because she believes in herself, that’s everything. That’s why I do this.
If you’re new to my brand, here’s what I want you to know—Bow-Aholic Bowtique and the Confident & Creative Girls Club are here to empower girls to be their most confident, creative, and courageous selves. Whether you’re a mom looking to bond with your daughter, a young girl searching for a supportive space, or just someone who believes in lifting up the next generation, there’s a place for you here.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Two books that have shaped how I run my business and lead are Start With Why by Simon Sinek and Daring Greatly by Brené Brown.
Start With Why helped me realize that Bow-Aholic Bowtique and the Confident & Creative Girls Club were never just about selling bows or hosting events—they were about creating confidence, community, creativity, and courage for young girls. My why is what keeps me going, even when things get hard.
Daring Greatly taught me that real leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about being vulnerable, taking risks, and showing up anyway. When I started both businesses, I had no idea if they would take off. But leaning into uncertainty and believing in my mission has helped me push forward and make an impact.
Both books remind me that real success comes from leading with purpose, taking chances, and showing up for the people who need you. That’s exactly what I try to pass on to the girls in my programs—believe in yourself, take the leap, and know that you’re capable of amazing things.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots I’ve had to make was stepping into a first-year teaching role while still feeling pulled to run my business full-time. I took the job thinking it would be the best move for my family and career, and maybe even help me make a bigger impact on kids. But if anything, it’s only made me realize just how much more I need to be fully hands-on with my business again.
Being in the classroom has confirmed something I’ve always believed—girls need more spaces where they can be creative in a supportive community. I see it every day. When kids feel confident expressing themselves, when they know their creativity matters, they show up in a whole new way. They participate more, take risks, and believe in themselves. But too often, those opportunities just aren’t there, especially for girls.
That’s why I know my heart is in running Bow-Aholic Bowtique and the Confident & Creative Girls Club full-time. It’s never just been about making bows or hosting events—it’s about creating something that helps girls thrive, both in and outside the classroom. This experience has been a wake-up call that the work I’m doing is needed, and I’m more determined than ever to make it happen.
