We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brian Baez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brian below.
Brian, appreciate you joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I started my content, creating journey in 2021 on Twitter spaces. The spaces were very communal. It was a place for people to join and talk about themselves and their days. It’s important to know that this was during the pandemic. Everyone was looking for some type of community. And five people turned into 10 people turned into 15 people turned into 80 people. And slowly, but surely the space grew and my following grew from 300 followers to 3000 followers in six weeks. I then said I wanted to create a show where this community of people could express themselves on substantive issues. The community space, uplifted Black, Latino, LGBTQ+ voices. If you looked on traditional media, you didn’t see many spaces if any where our voices were amplified or uplifted on substantive issues like religion versus spirituality, politics, mental health, etc. From then
As I built a stronger community I started getting into other spaces and heard bigger political voices like Kenny (also known as 2rawtooreal). His videos were making politics accessible to the general public in a way I hadn’t seen. He inspired me to do my own political content.
Then I began supporting Stacey Abrams for governor here in Georgia. I remember watching the Stacey Abrams versus Brian Kemp political debate from 2018 on my couch one night. And I distinctly remember seeing one portion of the debate where Stacey Abrams really hammered, Brian Kemp with a one minute spiel. I remember saying to myself if I screen record this and put this out it will go viral. And that’s exactly what I did. I screen recorded the one minute and posted on my Twitter. Overnight the video got 15 million views. It was talked about in mainstream media, The View, it was everywhere. From there, I remember reaching out to Stacey Abrams’s personal Twitter account and I wrote “hey Miss Abrams I wanna do everything that I can to get you elected if there’s ever anything that I can do to help please let me know.” And she reached out or someone in her team reached out and said “I appreciate the virality of that clip and we would love to get you connected to our team.” The rest was history.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Brian Baez, I’m a political content creator on TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Threads, Bluesky, and Youtube. I also have a YouTube show called the Mentally Divine Podcast. I am also the CEO of Mentally Divine Studios. My main focus is making politics accessible to all people but particularly Black, Latino, LGBTQ, and low-SES folks. Folks who are most-marginalized and have historically been and continue to be oppressed have the RIGHT to be politically active and understand the power of their civic engagement. That’s what I do and what I’m most proud of being able to accomplish in this work. I am also a strategist and do consult with organizations on how they can best optimize their resources when collaborating with content creators.
How did you build your audience on social media?
CONSISTENCY IS KEY. There is a mental grit that comes with this game. You have to remain determined and play the long game. There are overnight sensations but those are few and far between. There will be days you will put out content and very few people will watch. There will be LIVEs you do on any platform and very few people will watch. There will be times the algorithm suppresses your content. There will be times the audience may just not want to watch that specific type of content on that specific day. JUST KNOW…It happens to ALL OF US. It has even happened to your fave with millions of followers, at some point in their rise. Don’t let it discourage you. KEEP GOING!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Receipts! My type of content is socio-political commentary. It requires accuracy and precision when you’re analyzing the world. I include historical information, current events, and often connect dots where the mainstream media fails. Having the correct information and my sources with my information has gone a long way in building credibility.
