We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Blurbird a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Blurbird, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
For me, taking a risk isn’t just about making big, life-changing decisions. It’s about stepping into uncertainty with an open mind and finding opportunities for growth. Moving to the U.S. from Korea after building a solid career was one of the biggest risks I’ve taken. Adjusting to a different culture, a new creative environment, and finding my place in the industry here wasn’t easy. But rather than seeing these challenges as setbacks, I viewed them as chances to push myself further. I didn’t know exactly how things would unfold, but the sense of possibility was exciting. Over time, my network expanded, bringing new opportunities with it. This leap led me to discover a new identity as a mixed media artist, allowing me to showcase my digital media art and paintings in both Korea and the U.S. It’s been a continuous journey of growth, where each step has opened new doors, and I look forward to what lies ahead.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a mixed media artist and video creator with a decade of experience in the creative industry. In Korea, I worked as a director on music videos, commercials, and short films, and I continue to collaborate remotely with production teams there for pre-production tasks, such as writing proposals, creating storyboards, and handling post-production work. After moving to the U.S., I expanded my practice by studying visual effects and animation, and I am now providing video editing, filming and motion graphics services in the Bay Area. In addition to my video work, I’ve also been fortunate to connect with fine artists here, forming an art collective where we collaborate on projects and I showcase my personal artwork.
I find great joy in exploring new ways to communicate my inner messages and discovering innovative methods of self-expression beyond video. This journey has allowed me to grow and evolve in unexpected ways, and I’m excited to continue expanding my artistic identity while exploring new creative avenues and collaborating with like-minded individuals to create impactful work that pushes boundaries and inspires others.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe society can best support artists by bringing art closer to everyday life. This could mean making public spaces more creative, encouraging collaborations between artists and differnet industries, and using digital platforms to reach more people. Financial support is important, but more than that, we need a system that helps artistic voices be seen, heard, and engaged with in meaningful ways.
Art isn’t only about self-expression, but also about sharing ideas and emotions in way that words sometimes can’t. It allows for non-verbal communication, where a single image, sound, or movement can tell a story and evoke feelings instantly. It also encourages open interpretation. The same piece can mean different things to different people based on their experiences. In this way, art creates a conversation where the artist starts the dialogue, and the audience completes it with their own perspective.
Furthermore, art plays an important social role by reflecting culture, challenging ideas, and sparking discussions. Whether through film, installations, or digital media, art connects people and has the potential to inspire change.
To fully support art, society must go beyond financial support and create environments where a variety of artistic expressions are accessible to all. This includes fostering collaboration and ensuring that art can be integrated in to daily life in a meaningful way. By encouraging diversity in art and ensuring that it’s accessible, we can unlock its true potential as a tool for connection and transformation.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by the pursuit of finding meaningful messages in everyday life and expressing them in the most honest way possible. It’s not just about uncovering these ideas, but about simplifying them, making them clear, and translating them into something that can be easily understood and felt. For me, the challenge lies in not just identifying what I want to say, but in finding the most effective way to share it, making it resonate with others in a straightforward yet powerful manner.
