We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zoe $lim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Zoe, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path is when I was in the 5th grade. I’d randomly make beats with my hands on the lunch table and would turn my poems that I’ve written into freestyles just for fun. Of course I didn’t take it seriously then. It wasn’t until 2017 when I did the viral Still Standing Challenge. That video got close to 1 million views on Facebook and is still doing numbers on YouTube. That’s when I knew I wanted to take music and songwriting seriously. Sometimes it takes for us to go through serious situations in life in order for us to shine light on our God given gifts.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I feel like I’m still new to making music so I wouldn’t technically say I’m in the industry just yet. I do whole heartedly believe I will be very soon. My artist name Zoe $lim came from my high school nickname “Zoe” which most Haitians were called that growing up. $lim came from my small physique and having money. I recorded my first actual song back in 2021. I haven’t been really consistent until this year. Trying to juggle being a full time Mom and being an Artist isn’t easy. Studio time and purchasing the right beats that go with my aesthetic can be a bit expensive. I don’t have much help so this grind is definitely personal. I’m proud that I never gave up. I love my sound, creativity, and versatility and I know others do too. Music is like poetry to me which is why I write my own songs. It’s like who knows me better than me. You know?. I know this will all pay off in due time because believing in yourself is such a powerful thing.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the feedback I get. Not just from family and friends, but potential fans who have heard my music on different streaming platforms. I love getting random messages from people telling me that they heard one of my songs and for me to keep going because I’m truly talented. Support doesn’t come from familiar places which is another reason why I’m motivated to keep perfecting my craft and sharing it with the world.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Growing up I didn’t have it easy like most kids. I was somewhat raised by people who never cared to see my potential. As a kid that’s really frustrating. I was always told I’d never be nothing. I didn’t have a safe space so that resulted in me pouring my feelings out in poems or just journaling. I love a good story time which is why I also think others relate to my music so much. You can feel and also hear the authenticity.
