We were lucky to catch up with Rebecca Richard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission as a web designer is deeply rooted in my background in cybersecurity. After graduating, I worked at a Fortune 500 company, but the corporate environment didn’t align with my values. I saw firsthand how overwhelming and restrictive it could be, especially when I noticed how my manager’s schedule was packed with back-to-back meetings, leaving little room for creativity or balance.
That experience motivated me to start my own business in web design, where I could blend my technical skills with creativity. My goal is to empower others to pursue their dreams by creating websites that not only look professional but also streamline their processes, giving them back valuable time. By incorporating brand collateral and process automation into my work, I help clients present themselves cohesively across platforms while optimizing their workflows, allowing them to focus on what matters most. This mission is meaningful to me because it reflects my own journey toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Rebecca, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Rebecca Richard, a web platform developer, web designer, and automation specialist. My journey into this field started early—I took my first web design class in high school and was instantly hooked. That experience sparked my love for blending creativity with technical problem-solving, and from there, I dove deeper into computer science, eventually taking AP courses to strengthen my foundation. Later, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, where I learned the importance of privacy, digital security, and building resilient online systems.
While my time at a Fortune 500 company played a role in my decision to start my own business, my passion for web design was always there. Those early experiences in high school planted the seed, and over time, I realized I wanted more than just a traditional career—I wanted the freedom to create, innovate, and help businesses take control of their online presence.
I don’t just build websites—I create digital experiences that are sustainable, easy to manage, and designed to grow with my clients. I specialize in no-code platforms like Squarespace and Webflow, allowing business owners to maintain their sites without getting bogged down by complicated tech. My approach is all about making things as seamless as possible, ensuring my clients can focus on what they do best while their website works for them.
One of the biggest challenges I solve for my clients is reliability. Many have had frustrating experiences with freelancers—whether it’s lack of communication, disappearing acts, or websites they can’t update on their own. I take a different approach, prioritizing trust, transparency, and making sure my clients fully own their digital assets, so they’re never locked out or left in the dark.
I’ve worked with businesses across a wide range of industries, which has given me a strong understanding of unique business needs. One of the projects I’m most proud of is my work with Cyber Collective, a nonprofit I’ve been involved with since its inception. There, I helped build their website and develop engaging, accessible content that makes cybersecurity easier to understand. My background allows me to bring a security-first mindset to every project, helping businesses not just look good online but also protect their digital presence.
I’m also a Squarespace Expert, and I had the amazing opportunity to visit Squarespace’s headquarters in New York, deepening my connection to the platform and its community.
At the heart of everything I do is a commitment to intentionality. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions—every website and system I create is built to empower business owners, giving them tools that make their lives easier and their businesses stronger. My goal is always to leave clients better off than when they came to me, whether it’s through a website that truly reflects their brand, systems that save them time, or security practices that give them peace of mind.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One significant lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that you can’t make money from creativity. Growing up, we’re often shown career paths and given quizzes that point us to traditional jobs with clear formulas for success. But these conventional paths rarely account for the innovative careers that combine all the unique parts of who you are.
The backstory here is that when I was in school, I realized that to craft a career that truly resonates with your unique talents and passions, you have to think outside the box. Sometimes, your dream job doesn’t exist yet, and it’s up to you to create it. Unlearning the idea that success only comes from following a pre-defined route—like getting a corporate job and staying there for 30 years—was crucial. There’s never been a better time for creatives to carve out their own paths and build abundant, fulfilling careers from their creativity.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One of the biggest things that helped me build my reputation—aside from consistently delivering great work—is contributing on social media. Since college, I’ve been sharing my journey online, whether it’s through YouTube, trying out new technologies, or teaching people how to use different tools. By openly learning, experimenting, and sharing my insights, I’ve been able to build trust with potential clients before they even reach out to me.
When people do their own research before deciding to work with me, they can see that I’m deeply immersed in this field. This isn’t just a job for me—it’s something I genuinely love doing. That passion comes through in my content, and I think that’s really reassuring for clients. It shows them that I stay up to date with the latest trends, tools, and best practices—not because I have to, but because I enjoy it.
Unlike fields like cybersecurity, where certifications can validate your skills, web design doesn’t have a single certification that “proves” you’re good at what you do. So instead, I built my own credibility by being active in the web design community, sharing my knowledge, and engaging in conversations about design and digital strategy. That involvement not only helps me stay relevant, but it also ensures I understand what my clients need and how to best serve them.
At the end of the day, showing up online, sharing what I know, and building relationships through my content has been one of the most valuable ways I’ve established myself in this industry.
