We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Electra Rayne. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Electra below.
Electra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
It’s not secret that the vast majority of “lesbian porn” is actually made by and for straight men, and I can’t even count the number of Sapphic folks I’ve heard complain about how fake it is, and how they’d like to watch porn *in theory*, but how it’s not made for them and not at all appealing. I founded QueerCrush.com as a response to this issue, with the goal of creating content that accurately reflects the reality of lesbian sex as well as the diversity of the Sapphic commuty.
QueerCrush is a nonbinary & trans-inclusive site that shoots performers of all different body sizes, races, ages over 18, and styles/aesthetic presentations. Performers choose their own partners, wardrobe and styling, and everything they do in their scenes. We encourage our models to be “real people” on camera, including lube use, water breaks, check-ins and discussions in our scenes, and we only want them doing activities they genuinely enjoy. We even leave small mishaps and bloopers in our scenes. We also share content ownership with the performers so that they can monetize it themselves, and offer a 50% commission program for models as well.
We are proud to say that our after-shoot surveys (which are optional and anonymous) have had 100% positive feedback from our performers :)
Electra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Electra Rayne and I’m an adult performer and producer from Chicago, now based in Las Vegas. I’ve been in the adult industry in some capacity since 2015, with experience as a nude and fetish model, porn performer, stripper, cam girl, and content creator. In 2022 I started directing, and founded QueerCrush, the only lesbian adult site created 100% by (and for) actual Sapphic folks. In 2023 I also started working at Sheri’s Ranch, a legal brothel in Nevada, largely in part to fund QueerCrush, and in 2024 found viral success using TikTok to challenge the stigma surrounding sex work and brothels.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I decided to found the site, I naively believed we’d find an audience very quickly and become profitable (or at least be able to break-even) super quickly. I was so wrong! The regular porn audience wasn’t much interested in our site, and heavy restrictions on marketing adult content made it challenging for us to get the word out to the queer and Sapphic community. I was worried I’d have to give up on the studio, until I started working at Sheri’s Ranch. Now, I feel like gay robinhood–having sex with predominantly male clients for fairly large sums of money, then taking that money and using it to fund my queer business.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Of course there’s the obvious answer that I’m a queer woman–I’m bisexual, and married to a woman. This makes me an expert on our subject matter, but I think there’s another impartant factor at play here too. As a performer, I have seen the difference between studios managed by directors and producers who have worked as performers, and those that haven’t. I strive to make all of my performers feel as comfortable and supported on my set as I do on Aiden Starr’s set, another performer-turned-producer. Not only does this help the performers feel their best (and give their best performances), it’s also one of the reasons our audience loves us so much, since they’re often very concerned about the ethics of porn, and only want to consume content from studios who prioritize performer comfort and safety.
