We recently connected with Gaurav Dua and have shared our conversation below.
Gaurav , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My journey began in architectural design, which provided a strong foundation in spatial planning, materials, and construction techniques. However, my interest in fabrication grew over time, leading me to work with several renowned architectural fabrication companies. These experiences gave me hands-on exposure to building highly customized and intricate projects, ultimately steering me toward the world of set design and custom fabrication. Unlike traditional architecture, where projects can take years to complete, set design offers a fast-paced, visually expressive environment that better aligns with my creative instincts.
If I could have accelerated my learning process, I would have pursued hands-on experience in theatrical and production settings earlier. Architectural education is often theoretical, while set design demands adaptability, problem-solving, and close collaboration with creative teams. At the time, I wasn’t fully aware of the opportunities within custom fabrication and set design, but looking back, I wouldn’t change my path. My architectural background has equipped me with a versatile skill set that applies across multiple design disciplines.
The most essential skills in my field include technical drafting, 3D modeling, fabrication knowledge, and a deep understanding of materials and structural integrity. Equally important are soft skills like communication, teamwork, and the ability to translate artistic concepts into practical, buildable solutions.
One of the biggest challenges was shifting from the structured logic of architecture to the fluid, artistic nature of set design. Unlike permanent structures, sets need to be modular, lightweight, and often temporary, requiring a completely different approach to engineering and materials. Adapting to this mindset was both a challenge and an opportunity to expand my creative problem-solving abilities.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a technical designer and fabricator specializing in theatrical props and TV sets, with a background in architectural design and digital fabrication. My career began in architecture, where I developed a deep understanding of spatial design, structural integrity, and materials. However, I was drawn to a more dynamic and hands-on creative environment, which led me to transition into set design.
In my work, I bridge the gap between artistic vision and technical execution, ensuring that designs are both visually compelling and structurally sound. I collaborate with designers, production teams, and fabricators, creating technical drawings and 3D models that bring ambitious ideas to life.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend architectural precision with creative adaptability. My expertise in digital fabrication—including CNC machining and 3D printing—allows me to integrate modern fabrication techniques into set construction, improving efficiency and innovation. I take pride in projects that challenge both creative and technical boundaries, whether through unconventional materials, complex structural solutions, or large-scale immersive environments.
For potential clients and collaborators, I want them to know that my approach is rooted in both design and execution. I thrive on turning ambitious concepts into reality while ensuring a seamless balance between artistry and practicality.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of my work is seeing ideas come to life. Set and prop design is an ever-evolving field, where each project presents new challenges and opportunities for innovation. The fast-paced nature of the industry keeps me engaged, and the variety of materials, techniques, and problem-solving required makes every build unique.
I also love the collaborative aspect. Set design brings together multiple disciplines—scenic painting, lighting, digital fabrication, and traditional craftsmanship—to create immersive experiences. Being part of that creative synergy and seeing the final product in action, whether on stage or screen, is incredibly fulfilling.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
At the core of my work is a desire to merge technical precision with artistic expression. I’m passionate about designing and fabricating spaces that are both visually striking and functionally seamless.
A major focus of mine is pushing the boundaries of set design through digital fabrication and innovative materials. I’m constantly exploring how emerging technologies can improve production efficiency, durability, and sustainability. With my background in architectural technology, I also have a strong interest in workflow optimization and how AI can enhance the custom fabrication industry.
Beyond my own projects, I want to contribute to the next generation of designers and fabricators. I’m interested in the pedagogical side of design and hope to share my knowledge and experiences with others. At the same time, I’d love to stay involved in select architectural projects when time allows, continuing to explore the intersection between architecture, fabrication, and set design.
