We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
I feel as though this is a touchy topic because it really does depend. Through my experiences in this industry starting out, I would only ask for my friends and family to be my models. Of course they would be supportive then because it’s almost free and I wasn’t that bad at doing hair anyway. As I got better and made this my profession my clients become more of my support system then anybody else. Even then my clients became my friends. With that being said I don’t really have that issue now, but what would bother me was when family/friends would reach there hand out so fast for a discount but wouldn’t hesitate to go to the next person or buy that new pair of shoes that just dropped.
Jasmine , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello I am JMonét, CEO of JMonétHairDesignsLLC. I am a natural hair care specialist from Philadelphia PA. I service clients in PA, VA, TX, and NYC at the moment. I started doing hair in 10th grade after finding a passion in natural hair care selling natural oils and products. I gave up selling products to focus on servicing clients in my area and have been doing hair ever since. I now go to Virginia State University where I was awarded and have the luxury of being titled “Best hairstylist” via student choice. JMonétHairDesignsLLC now offers high quality raw Vietnamese extensions that enhances my clients luxury installs and can last 3+ years/ multiple wears with good care. I’m excited to enter this new chapter as we are just getting started. Through years of passion, creativity, and hard work, our mission is to empower individuals through personalized, high-quality hair artistry that enhances beauty and builds confidence.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My side hustle definitely turned into my full-time business/career. Growing up I never thought my interest in natural hair care for myself would grow into helping women feel beautiful every day. I started doing hair for myself in 10th grade and made it an open service for others to book after Covid for extra pocket money as a teenager. I then went to college and it was perfect for extra money as a college student. Now graduating this upcoming May over the years of hard work and dedication put into my business, I cannot see myself giving this up for anything else.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Especially being in college, I can say the most effective strategy for growing my clientele would have been networking. Social media such as Instagram and TikTok is always a plus, but I think people tend to forget about the good old-fashioned, word-of-mouth and old marketing strategies as well. With everyone being on campus and away from home people want to go to somebody that is trustworthy and dependable. Therefore, not only does my work speak for itself, my professionalism and people skills help attract new clientele, and keep loyal customers.
