Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shaneisha Dodson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shaneisha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
When I came up with the idea to create my first doll, I began to look for a graphic designer who could sketch out my idea. From there, I found a company to make a prototype. I continued to do research until the final doll was made.

Shaneisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an award-winning playwright and doll maker. I enjoy creating stories and products. I’m most proud of creating my first doll. I remember the first time that a little girl said, “she looks like me.” She was talking about my doll. This was an amazing feeling because all children need to be able to see themselves represented.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
No one will care about your business more than you.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
My initial capital came from my savings and a Kickstarter campaign. I tucked away any free money that I had until I had saved enough for my first order of dolls.
