We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Myers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
Before May of 2020, I never envisioned myself as an owner. I’ve always felt value in being great support for a great leader. However, that year thrust me into taking the drivers seat.
When the world started to reopen after covid, I was forcibly kicked out of the salon I was paying booth rent in. I was floored and flabbergasted! I had no plan, no resources, and no clue what to do. I was flirting with the idea of opening a suite but the expense seemed more than I could handle and decided not to.
On pure instinct, I called the sales rep, signed my lease, and moved in. There were plastic tubs, a household hairdryer, and a dream.
My first day there I decided not to focus on what I didn’t have or the weird color on the walls or anything else that would distract me from doing what I do best, hair.
Every client that weekend tipped me with an overwhelming abundance! I was so very moved! I was speaking my vision and every Guest believed in me so much they planted seeds into my business. I drove home in TEARS that weekend. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I was quickly and firmly reminded even when I am unsure, my world believes I am capable.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have always been a creative person. I have also always been bossy (LOL). So it seemed like a natural progression to one day be able to create in my very own space.
As an owner of a salon suite, I have the ability to service my Guests to my highest potential. Which I’m learning is much higher than I previously have given myself credit for.
Helping people has always been a passion of mine. Volunteering and Teaching others seem to go hand in hand with helping so much of my youth was doing just that. Now, I am able to make people feel their best and guide them through maintaining that until we meet again. Hair and makeup don’t just feed the physical appearance, it truly can heal the soul.
I ensure my space is peaceful and equipped. Whatever weight you came in with, gets washed away down the sink and the aromatherapy from the hot towel soothes life’s ailments; even if just for a moment. I strive to be a space of healing. The lack of bad hair days really make an already hectic life a touch better.
I’m most proud of my client’s reviews! In a culture where some would do ANYTHING for likes, I value the honest Guest reviews. Not only are they helpful for those seeking hair and makeup services, but they encourage me to stay my course. The work I do is important and that’s a great feeling.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has and always will be consistency in my craft. Even when I only had 5 clients, giving great service was top priority.
Marketing is not my strongsuit. Services on my menu changes. Trends change. But one thing my Guests know for sure is whatever style or makeup look they ask for, I will execute.

Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
I’ve been in my suite for 2 years and eventhough things are great, my creativity needs many outlets. Some things I do for money and others I do just because I enjoy it.
One of the things I did as supplementary income was create and self publish workbooks on services I specialize in. The first being the Silk Press, which is temporarily taking extra curly hair to smooth and silky with the use of just a blow dryer and flat iron and then The Relaxer, which changes the hair from Curly to straight permanently. I didn’t stop there! I also published a children’s coloring book dedicated to highlighting my Caribbean roots and culture. Currently, all three publications are available on Amazon.
