We were lucky to catch up with Darnell Hubbard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darnell, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
I would take my face away from the brand. I believe this can hinder a business. Myself I show love and keep it cordial with everybody there is not a specific group or section that can claim me or I belong to… To me that’s a way of limiting yourself, perspective, knowledge, experiences and overall your elevation in life or your preferred profession. It just comes with a certain bias in my experience, city or situation. But since I didn’t or don’t fall in line with that it seems people know me but don’t know me… But nevertheless I would thing I’m respected amongst my peers but overall I’m not a fan favorite or a person that’s sought out… Which is ok though practice & discipline you learn to ignore those type of things and just stay focused on your end goal, staying original, and producing quality work. Truth be told they might not support you or believe in you now; but they will definitely spin the block they will come back around n when they do that days price won’t be yesterdays price…
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Darnell “Nells” Hubbard in from New York; Eastside Buffalo,NY to be exact. I am a Streetwear clothing designer & stylist. Who’s not like most designer who make nostalgic pieces which are super dope but me I create a new lane something that tells a story, motivates or challenge your perspective (something to talk about) Something NEW, DIFFERENT, ORIGINAL, BUT YET CREATIVE. That is what set me apart from the other brands out there mainstream or up n coming.. I most proud of the progress, my increase in knowledge & love for what I’ve been doing increased. throughout my years it’s been a long time coming I just pray I continue to stay focused and continue to grow..
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to learn is never down play what you do, always remember it’s business never personal and always be humble but be stern.. By doing so you allow room for growth new experiences, meet new people which will bread new opportunities.
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
Myself I try to make it a point to support other small business or business period.. Especially if I like the product & I love to see others taking their business serious and perfecting their craft.. It’s kind of hard because I am a tough critic when buying other clothes especially since I’m big on originality…
