We were lucky to catch up with Katherine Buckley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katherine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I’ve always loved making movies. When I was eight, I made my first video on a VHS camera with my brothers, and I was hooked. I loved directing, acting, and bringing my ideas to life. As I got older, I taught myself how to edit, shoot, and do everything necessary to produce short films. That passion led me to study film in New York, where I eventually got a job as an editor. But acting was always my ultimate goal—I just knew that my other skills would help me stay afloat in the meantime.
When I moved to LA to pursue acting professionally, I faced a lot of rejection. Auditions came and went, and so many opportunities I wanted just didn’t pan out. Eventually, I realized that if something was going to happen for me, I needed to make it happen for myself.
That’s when I came up with the idea to create short videos with some friends from my acting class and post them online. I wrote scripts about a struggling actress named Kelly (inspired by me), who was determined to make a name for herself but constantly felt overlooked and unappreciated. She believed in her talent, but convincing the world to see it was the real difficulty. I called it Underrated.
I knew it had to be a comedy because making people laugh is what I love most. I pulled inspiration from my family’s funniest stories, and when I shared the scripts with close friends and family, they loved it. The more people I showed, the more wanted to be involved. My brother came on to direct, my writer friend helped rewrite the series, and soon enough, I had a whole crew and a cast of over 30 people. We had a story that was both hilarious and meaningful—now the challenge was bringing it to life.
The new scripts called for more actors, more locations, props—things I didn’t have an allocated budget for. There was a point during pre-production where I genuinely considered giving up. The expenses piled up, I had to dip into my savings, work extra hours on top of my job, and that nagging voice of doubt kept creeping in: What if it’s not enough? What if you do all this, spend all this money, and it doesn’t turn out how you imagined?
Then I came across a quote: “To get something you never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.” And that was it—I knew I couldn’t quit. I had to take the risk, trust myself, and let the series be whatever it was meant to be.
So we made Underrated. And it was worth every bit of the risk.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a comedic actress and content creator who loves bringing characters to life through relatable, character-driven skits. My content is all about capturing the funny, sometimes absurd moments in everyday life. I love taking those universal experiences and exaggerating them just enough to make people laugh and say, “Wait… that’s literally me.”
I got into this space because I’ve always been drawn to comedy and storytelling. Making people laugh has always been my favorite thing to do, and creating content allows me to share that joy with as many people as possible. What started as a fun creative outlet quickly turned into something more when I realized how much people connected with my videos. The comments from people saying, “I feel so seen” or “I just sent this to my whole group chat” made me realize I was onto something.
Beyond my short-form skits, I also created a web series, which has been such an exciting and fulfilling project. It’s given me the chance to expand my storytelling and comedy in a bigger way, and I’m so proud of how it’s resonated with my audience.
More than anything, I just want to make people laugh. If my content can bring someone joy, even for just a few seconds, then I’ve done what I set out to do.
For anyone new to my content, I’d say: if you love humor that’s grounded in real-life moments, you’re in the right place!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is spreading joy and making people laugh with my content. There’s something so special about knowing that a video I made could brighten someone’s day, even if just for a moment. Whether it’s a relatable skit that makes someone say, “That’s so me,” or a character that reminds them of their best friend, I love creating those little moments of connection through humor. Seeing people engage, share, and laugh along with my content is the best feeling—it reminds me why I do what I do.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think one thing non-creatives might struggle to understand is just how much work goes into making something look effortless. A short, funny skit might seem like it was thrown together in minutes, but behind the scenes, there’s so much thought and effort—from coming up with the idea to writing, filming, editing, etc. It’s not just about being funny; it’s about timing, delivery, pacing, and making sure it all feels natural and engaging.
Another thing people might not realize is how much of a mental game it can be. Creativity isn’t something you can just turn on like a switch. Some days, ideas flow effortlessly, and other days, you’re staring at a blank screen, questioning everything. There’s also the pressure of staying consistent, keeping up with trends while staying true to your own style, and dealing with the ups and downs of engagement.
But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The joy of making people happy and seeing my work resonate with others makes all the challenges worth it. So if you’re a creative struggling with those moments of doubt, just know—it’s all part of the process.
