We were lucky to catch up with Carla Skinner recently and have shared our conversation below.

Carla, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?

So the story Behind Floras Beauty Lounge is my late mother Mrs. Floras Jean, I lost my mother in 2000 due to scleroderma, a terminal lung disease. When I became a Business owner, even before that, I had decided that her name would live on.

Carla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

So the story behind how I became a successful Salon owner, inluencer and a great Stylist/ Makeup artist is my mom. From the tender age of 12 my mother allowed me to do her hair, I would put crochets and braids and weaves into my mother’s hair. She was such a Diva. I never witnessed my mother in a scarf outside of the home. My mother would not even go to ‘the grocery store without her makeup on. All I ever wanted to do was be like her. I decided during my third year out of school as a licensed nurse that I wanted to go into the Beauty Industry fulltime and not just for a hobby.

The problems that I solve on a daily basis for my clients and well as my clients solving problems for me, is to jsut be a sounding board for all of lifes issues and problems. Be that peace of mind.

The thing that sets me apart from others is that, I walk it like I talk it, I am the same mother, wife, believer, sister friend that I in my personal life, with my clients as well. I am organized and efficient. I have been for over 28 years licensed in 4 states, Michigan, Florida, California and now Texas.

The most thing that I am proud of is the fact that I am able to overcome adversity, loss and hard times and still always wear a smile and have always given my gift the best of me. I never allow any outside influences or lifes issues to interfere with my dream, and thats assisting ppl to bring out their best in them. No one will ever have the satisfaction of seeing me upset or uneasy. I am the most happy and positive Black Woman that I know. Even when I lost my 6 year old autistic son tragically 08/20/2024, I was back in The Lounge two days later doing what I love to do, Styling and profiling…..Changing The world one brush stroke at a time. I feel like if you look good, you feel good.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

I moved to Texas From Michigan in August of 2023, By advertising, collaborating with other stylist and makeup artist, social media posting, walking the neighborhood posting my work, By January 2024, i had a full schedule in a new town.Just my work alone and my character and demeanor brought ppl to Floras Beauty Lounge

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

The most important thing is to simply be yourself. There are people that can detect someone trying to be someone else. In the beauty world, clients look for people that are naturally beautiful inside and out. I don’t care how gifted or talented a individual might be, if your attitude and social demeanor are off, your whole business is off as well. You have to be talented and gifted naturally. Beautifying the world is not something that is learned, its given by GOD./\A gift
