Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dj Prime. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dj prime , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
At the age of 11, I had the opportunity to observe my five cousins, who resided in Harlem, New York, as they engaged in DJing. During weekends, I would visit them and spend hours watching them skillfully mix records. I was utterly fascinated, unable to fully comprehend the intricacies of their craft. My admiration intensified when I saw the legendary Jam Master Jay on MTV; it was at that moment I realized my aspiration to become a DJ. I requested my mother to purchase turntables for me, specifically the iconic Technics 1200, which are still celebrated today. Once I acquired them, I became deeply involved in performing at parties in schools and clubs. I soon recognized the potential to earn money through this passion, prompting me to concentrate on organizing more events and delving further into the art of DJing.

Dj prime , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I embarked on my DJ career in 1989, having been immersed in music throughout my life, thanks to my soulful family background. As a child, I would often scratch my mother’s records, prompting her to admonish me not to damage them. This experience only deepened my passion for DJing, leading me to learn the art of mixing records across various genres without confining myself to a single style. I also acquired skills in repairing and enhancing equipment to boost my setup’s power.
Once I became proficient in mixing and transitioning tracks, I aspired to elevate my craft further. This ambition led me to explore the realm of turntablism and DJ battling, where I learned to manipulate sounds through techniques such as backspinning, scratching, and beat juggling. This challenging art form opened up a new dimension of expression for me, distinct from traditional mixing. From 1989 to 1997, I was deeply engaged in the art of DJing. However, in 1998, I decided to take a hiatus to concentrate on music production, allowing my DJing pursuits to take a back seat.
In 2002, I returned to the scene, primarily focusing on DJ battles and participating in several local competitions. After two years, I found myself stepping away from DJing again, leading to a 15-year hiatus. The passing of my cousin in September 2020, who had been my mentor, reignited a spark within me, compelling me to return to my passion. In November 2020, I invested in the necessary equipment to resume DJing and have since pursued it with vigor. This journey has introduced me to remarkable individuals and led to my achievement of second place in the Cold Cuts DJ battle. I now share my knowledge by teaching DJ lessons to both children and adults, offering guidance and sharing the experiences I have accumulated over the years.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It is my belief that there is not a singular method for cultivating an audience on social media. However, I can assert that authenticity resonates with individuals; it is essential to be genuine and to express oneself to the best of one’s ability, without the pretense of being someone else. I frequently share various aspects of my life, including my musical endeavors, creative pursuits, and the challenges I face in acquiring new skills and engaging in practice sessions. I have observed a significant increase in my audience over time, which I attribute to the relatability of my experiences and struggles.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I aim to demonstrate my creativity and the new skills I have acquired, along with the discipline required to achieve them. Additionally, I aspire to share my knowledge with others, helping to alleviate the challenges I faced during my learning process.
