Drs. Joseph Claiborne & Felicia Ekpo, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear stories from your time in school/training/etc.
Dr. Felicia Ekpo DO, FAAD
Becoming a board-certified dermatologist and hair loss specialist requires years of rigorous training, but the privilege of making a meaningful difference in my patients’ lives makes every challenge worthwhile. I am deeply grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ for guiding me through this demanding journey and for the success I’ve experienced along the way.
I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Langston University and Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning the highest honors in my class. I then completed a dually accredited dermatology residency program at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Michigan, where I was the first African American dermatology resident. This residency exposed me to a diverse range of dermatological conditions, with over 130,000 patients seen annually in a variety of clinical settings. Through this experience, I honed my expertise in treating skin cancer, autoimmune skin diseases, complex medical dermatology, skin of color dermatology, pediatric dermatology, hair loss, chemical and environmental skin irritants, as well as mastering dermatological surgery, cosmetic injectables, chemical peels, and laser treatments.
During this time, I was appointed as assistant faculty at Michigan State University College of Medicine, where I had the privilege of mentoring and teaching medical students in dermatology. One of the most impactful moments in my residency occurred when I diagnosed a patient with Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA), a scarring form of hair loss that can lead to permanent baldness if not treated early. This diagnosis was not only difficult for the patient but also heartbreaking, as she had not been given an explanation for her condition, despite its worsening after a significant life event.
Together, we created a personalized treatment plan, combining medical therapy, emotional support, and practical solutions, such as connecting her with a stylist who could help prevent further hair loss. Over the course of the year, her hair began to grow, and this experience fueled my passion for further research and treatment of hair loss. I was motivated to investigate health disparities in hair loss treatments and to develop more effective, equitable approaches to prescribing and treating these conditions.
To further my commitment, I conducted research on various types hair loss at the Cleveland Clinic under the guidance of Dr. Wilma Bergfield, a world-renowned expert in hair restoration. In addition to this, I pursued advanced training in Skin of Color Dermatology at Heidelberg Dermatology in Detroit, MI, and an apprenticeship in Hair Restoration Surgery at Yates Hair Transplant Hair Science in Chicago, IL. I am proud to be a member of the International Hair Restoration Society and currently practice at Doctor Edges Hair Restoration, Dermatology, Aesthetics, and Wellness in Garland, Texas.
With over a decade of experience, I have diagnosed and treated countless skin, hair, and nail conditions using a combination of medical therapies, dermatological surgery, chemical peels, and hair transplant techniques. My mission is to collaborate with my patients to restore their hair, skin, confidence, and self-esteem. Each day, I am honored to serve my patients and to be a part of their healing journey.
As a board-certified dermatologist and hair loss specialist, my work is not just a career—it’s a calling. I am deeply committed to advancing the science of dermatology, improving patient outcomes, and ensuring equitable care for all individuals, regardless of their skin type or hair texture. It is my sincere belief that every patient deserves the opportunity to feel confident and empowered in their own skin.
Dr. Joseph Claiborne MD, FACP:
From a young age, I have been captivated by science and the intricate workings of the human body, which naturally led me to pursue a career in medicine. After graduating from Howard University as a two-sport student-athlete, I chose to become a personal trainer to deepen my understanding of human physiology and its limits. During this time, while preparing for the medical entrance exam, I worked with a client who was struggling with significant weight gain, thyroid issues, and cardiovascular concerns. This individual had never exercised before and sought my guidance to lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
After taking the time to understand their health history, goals, and concerns, I designed a personalized exercise and nutrition plan tailored to their needs. Over the course of a year, this client lost 30 pounds, gained muscle mass, adopted a sustainable eating regimen, and even began competing in triathlons. Witnessing their transformation ignited a deeper passion within me to help people not only improve their physical health but also enhance their quality of life through exercise, healthy living, and long-term wellness.
This experience solidified my decision to pursue a career in medicine, and I was later accepted into Meharry Medical College. During my clinical rotations, I remained focused on my goal of providing a holistic approach to patient care. I went on to complete a residency in Internal Medicine at DMC Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, where I had the opportunity to further refine my clinical skills. In addition to my medical training, I obtained further training in Functional Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, a credential that significantly enriched my understanding of the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and environmental factors in chronic disease. This knowledge has allowed me to better prevent, treat, and manage chronic conditions, fostering a more comprehensive approach to patient care.
In my practice, I view each patient as a whole person, considering not just their medical symptoms but also their lifestyle, emotional health, and environment. My goal is to communicate a clear, actionable health plan that empowers patients to take control of their well-being. This approach ensures that patients achieve sustainable weight loss, long-term health benefits, and ultimately reach their fullest potential for wellness.
I have found that the direct primary care model is the best way to achieve this vision. My patients appreciate the time I dedicate to understanding their unique needs, the personalized care I provide, and the comprehensive support they receive from my entire team. The transparent pricing and improved access to healthcare services have further enhanced their experience. In turn, this model has led to better patient outcomes, higher satisfaction, and stronger relationships built on trust and collaboration.
Ultimately, my goal as a physician is to help patients achieve optimal health by addressing the root causes of chronic conditions and supporting them in living a healthier, more fulfilling life. Through my practice of integrative medicine, a holistic approach to care, and the direct primary care model, I am able to offer a level of care that goes beyond traditional medicine—one that is truly transformative and patient-centered.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Dr. Felicia Ekpo, DO, FAAD:
While my formal education and clinical training have provided a solid foundation, I’ve come to realize that true success in dermatology and hair restoration involves much more than just medical knowledge. Over the years, I’ve learned that clinical experience, personal qualities, business acumen, and adaptability to evolving technologies are all critical components of my growth and success in this field.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of hands-on experience. My journey in dermatology and hair restoration has shown me that the more cases I handle, the sharper my diagnostic and treatment skills become. Whether it’s recognizing a subtle skin condition or determining the best approach for a hair restoration procedure, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of precision. In hair restoration, especially, small details—like the angle at which I implant follicles—make a huge difference in the final result. The more I practice, the more confident and accurate I’ve become in delivering the best care to my patients.
Empathy has proven to be just as important as clinical skill in my practice. Many of my patients, particularly those seeking hair restoration, come to me with concerns about their appearance and self-esteem. Building a genuine connection with them—listening to their fears, addressing their hopes, and providing a sense of reassurance—has been a cornerstone of my success. Over time, I’ve learned how vital it is to communicate clearly and set realistic expectations. This not only helps alleviate anxiety but also ensures a smoother treatment process and stronger patient satisfaction.
The world of dermatology and hair restoration is constantly evolving, and I’ve had to remain open to new developments and technologies. I make it a priority to stay informed by attending conferences, reading the latest research, and connecting with fellow professionals in the field. These efforts have enabled me to stay on top of emerging treatments, such as robotic-assisted hair transplants and advanced skincare therapies. Adapting to these innovations has been key to providing my patients with cutting-edge care and maintaining my edge as a practitioner.
In hair restoration, aesthetic sense is an absolute must. I’ve learned that it’s not just about restoring hair but about achieving a natural, balanced look that aligns with the patient’s features and desires. It requires a fine understanding of facial anatomy, hair patterns, and the art of designing a treatment plan that fits the patient’s unique characteristics. Additionally, patience is key—many treatments take time to show results, and managing patient expectations throughout that process is an important part of my approach. Clear communication and a calm, supportive attitude during the waiting period help ensure that my patients feel cared for every step of the way.
Looking back, I see that my success in dermatology and hair restoration has been shaped by a combination of factors beyond just medical knowledge. It’s the blend of clinical experience, empathy, and constant learning that has allowed me to grow in this field. By focusing on both the art and science of dermatology and hair restoration, I’ve been able to build a practice where I not only deliver exceptional care but also build lasting relationships with my patients. These elements have been key to my journey, and they continue to guide me as I strive to achieve even greater success in the future.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Dr. Joseph Claiborne MD, FACP:
If I could go back to the moment I first decided to become a doctor, I would choose the same path without hesitation. Specializing in internal medicine, weight loss, and wellness, and running a direct care practice has been incredibly fulfilling. The ability to truly connect with my patients, address their health holistically, and offer personalized care has been the most rewarding aspect of my career.
Internal medicine drew me in because it allows me to treat the whole person—diagnosing and managing complex conditions while forming lasting relationships. Over time, I realized how weight and overall wellness impact so many chronic diseases. Specializing in weight loss and wellness was a natural extension of my practice, as it aligns with my belief that true health is about prevention and balance, not just symptom management. Helping patients lose weight, improve their lifestyle, and reverse chronic conditions is deeply rewarding and goes beyond just physical health—it empowers them to live better, longer lives.
Operating a direct care practice has given me the autonomy to focus on what truly matters: my patients. Unlike traditional models where volume is prioritized, I can spend quality time with each patient, understand their needs, and offer tailored care. This model allows me to help patients manage their health long-term, including their weight and overall wellness, without the interference of insurance companies or rushed appointments. Direct care creates a more meaningful, consistent relationship, which leads to better outcomes and patient satisfaction.
In a direct care setting, I’m able to approach health holistically, offering personalized wellness plans that include nutrition, exercise, and mental health support. This is particularly important for weight loss, as sustainable results require a multifaceted approach.
If I could start over, I wouldn’t change a thing. Becoming a doctor specializing in internal medicine, weight loss, and wellness, and adopting the direct care model has allowed me to practice medicine in a way that aligns with my values. The ability to form deep relationships with patients and offer personalized, proactive care has been the most rewarding part of my career. I would choose this path again, knowing I’m making a meaningful difference in my patients’ lives.
