We recently connected with Wykia Chisolm-Jackson and have shared our conversation below.
Wykia, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To become successful in any business or career, I believe it takes faith, hard work, discipline, sacrifice and dedication. Many people have the idea that you can just come up with a business idea and/or product to sale and instantly start making money. When it fact, you should start by creating a business plan; decide who you target market is, what you can bring to your industry that the competition doesn’t have, as well as many other important factors. I also believe that customer service and providing an outstanding customer experience plays a major role in what it takes to be successful. Creating products that customers want and building a loyal customer base is extremely important. At times it may seem like nothing is working, but you can’t give up; that’s where faith comes in. You just have to keep faith, find what mistakes you made the first time and hone in on improving.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Brick City Custom Tees was founded in 2016 by my husband, Shawn Jackson and I; as a small home-based business making custom T-Shirts. We had no idea that our business would excel the way that it has today. We started out just making shirts for family and friends and then by word of mouth and social media, the orders started to roll in. After about six months, we started our online store and business has been booming ever since. As a family-owned company, we enjoy and are passionate about creating memories for families, organizations, businesses, etc. Furthermore, Brick City Custom Tees specializes in custom T-Shirt, hoodies, tanks, and accessories design. We are a company of movers, shakers, and believers. We understand that we’re not just printing t-shirts, etc.’ we’re helping people make memories. We are constantly improving because we treat our workspace, not just a place to do business, but as a place to learn and grow in our industry. We’re always working on new ways to deliver an even higher quality product with even faster turnaround times. From every print detail and exceptional customer service to something as simple as delivering on the day we promise, we make sure you receive what you want; when you want it. We have a deep appreciation for our incredible customers, our children who helps out a lot, and the new heights we expect to reach. We also started our own clothing brand “Black Wealth” just about a year ago and it has been doing exceptionally well. This brand doesn’t just represent wealth in the sense of money but wealth in all aspects of our life such as our physical and mental health.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is actually my husband, Shawn Jackson. We met 23 years ago, in the year of 1999. The funny thing is we actually went to the same high school but never crossed paths. I was walking to the store one day and this tall skinny guy comes up to me and says he wants to be my boyfriend and I just laughed, shrugged him off and kept on going about my business. Unbeknownst to me, Shawn already knew my eldest sister. So a few days later I go to my sister’s house and I see the same tall skinny guy and I ask my sister, who’s this guy because he tried to talk to me the other day? My sister just laughed and said oh girl that’s Snoop (which is a nick name all of our close friends and family call him) he’s cool give him a chance. From that day on we’ve been inseparable. Today, we have been together 23 years and married for 17 years. We have 4 children and 2 grandchildren who inspires and motivates us to be great daily.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
We engage with our customers on all of our social media platforms. We post updates about new products, discounts, and even do some giveaways. This keeps customers in the know of what’s going on and offers an immediate way for them to communicate with us which turns into a healthy loyal customer base. We have also had some influencers to promote our brand which helps us gain new customers and gives us the opportunity to build rapport with them.
