We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christian Perez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christian below.
Hi Christian, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
One Halloween, I decided I wanted to give special effects makeup and prosthetics a try. Being an art major my whole life, I knew my way around painting, but I had zero idea how makeup and prosthetics worked. I bought some cheap spirit halloween makeup and liquid latex and followed a couple YouTube videos. It actually came out really nice! People kept asking for more and I enjoyed making them, so I started doing video game characters, themes, and branched into regular makeup and just really enjoyed the process. I’m very grateful to my art teachers who taught me the basics of art, I think that really helped me tap into a different world of makeup that I’m fortunate enough to share with people in a way I find is entertaining.
Christian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a makeup artist content creator who does Celebrity and Pop Culture Icon impersonation. I was a contestant on Youtube Original’s Instant Influencer, where I was given a platform to express myself and entertain others. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to work with the likes of Calvin Klein, the Grammy’s, Ulta Beauty and Target. I love to combine Humor and Creativity to create something that is both funny and impressive that leaves someone wondering “how?” I pride myself in being a creative person always looking for the next big project I can be a part of!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
to grow on social media, you need something unique that provides value, and you need to create a narrative. when you create something that is a space exclusive to you or your brand, you set yourself up for attention, because people are intrigued by things they’ve never seen or don’t see very often. Once you find what is true to you and is attracting people, you need to continue the narrative and maintain the relevance in a fun and fresh way that keeps people coming back. Once you have established that connection and have an audience that is invested in you, that’s when you can start branching out into more content with similar tones to keep people engaged without being stuck in a niche. It’s very important that it’s something you’re passionate about! People can tell when you’re invested in something- and they like that!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Creativity has taught me the art of possibility. Had I not believed I had a chance to be on a reality show at 18, I would never be where I am today, and looking back at it, there was such a small chance that something like that would happen and yet it did! Put yourself out there, be uncomfortable, Be open to the possibility of something better, just because something doesn’t have a linear path doesn’t mean it’s unattainable. Be creative in your solutions- Creativity leads to innovation and improvement!
