We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zoey Taylor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zoey below.
Hi Zoey , thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I’m hoping to be part of the bridge in the gap between the old generation and the new generation of tattoo artists. I hope to train, teach, or influence as many young artists as I can. I’d love to watch them become better than me. I hope I will be remembered as someone who guided and had a positive impact on many young people.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a self taught tattoo artists – or at least I didn’t have an apprenticeship. I did learn from many artists who let me watch over their shoulders. I’ve been tattooing almost 25 years now, and it’s been a long and a rough road, both in art and in business. A trial by fire! But it’s made me uniquely qualified to teach, and I would love to focus much of my future on teaching and sharing.
Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
I did, I was already self employed and was going back to sunset blvd and the tattoo shop that used to employ me, to buy and take over the business. It felt like such a special thing to be able to do, but ultimately it wasn’t the smart way to grow. In “buying” the existing business, all I was doing was taking over the lease, and this should not have come at the purchase price that it did. Had I known then what I know now I would have stayed where I was a couple more years and then expanded on my own. I did not take over the previous business’ name or clientele, so that was an expensive lesson to learn.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
For me this has simply been grinding in the same city for over two decades, putting out consistently good work, but always better than last year. Word of mouth has always kept me busier than anything else.
