Kamara, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is a personal concept, defined differently by each individual. For some, it’s reaching a financial milestone; for others, it’s pursuing their passion as a career. For many, it simply means finding happiness.
For me, success is a mix of all these elements. I love connecting with my clients, as I’m naturally outgoing. Some days, I feel successful; other days, I don’t—that’s just part of the journey. Learning to navigate the highs and lows of the industry is, in its own way, a badge of success.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I enrolled in the Algonquin College Photography program in Ottawa, Ontario, right after high school. This program was instrumental in my growth, providing a strong technical foundation in photography. It also helped lay the groundwork for a career in the industry, setting me up for success when I graduated in 2014.
After graduating, I took an archival photography job but quickly realized that the 9-to-5 desk life wasn’t for me. I then started assisting notable photographers in the community while also taking on smaller shoots of my own.
From here I was able to network and grow my own client base. I always have loved photographing people, but also have had a new love for the world of product photography.
My biggest passion has always been live music photography, along with collaborating with artists on album covers and promotional images. I’ve been fortunate to photograph festivals like Osheaga, Ottawa Bluesfest, and CityFolk, among many others. Capturing my favorite artists has been a lifelong dream, and getting to do so each year is a true highlight for me.
Events make up the biggest part of my photography work. I love the thrill of capturing moments that can never be recreated.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Like many photographers, I had to pivot during COVID-19. Fortunately, I was able to shoot regularly for The National Observer, covering news stories and press conferences related to the pandemic.
I had been just weeks away from investing in new photography gear when everything shut down—a humbling experience, to say the least.
As restrictions shifted, I adapted by following regulations, continuing to work, and assisting other photographers when possible. Though it was a challenging time for my career, it also gave me space to reflect and reevaluate why I chose this path.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My best source of clients has always been networking and word-of-mouth referrals. I strive to be my genuine self in all aspects of life, and that naturally carries over into my career.
I’ve learned that you can be strategic while still staying true to your core values. At the end of the day, I believe that what you put out into the world comes back to you.
