We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josephine Agrawal. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josephine below.
Josephine, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
The marketing industry is rife with “full-service” agencies who do everything okay, but nothing with excellence. After working for and with agencies for years, we saw clients get the short end of the stick when agencies split their time and skills, so we decided to focus our agency on one thing and do it excellently. By becoming experts at social media, we’re able to give our clients dedicated time and years of expertise on what they need to grow their business through social media.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We tell brands’ stories, one post at a time. We’re a social media agency who works with brands across industries to build highly engaged social media followings. From tinned fish to cybersecurity and everything in between – we’ve worked across most social media platforms. We are a strategy-first social agency, which means everything we do on social media ladders up to bigger business goals. We’re not just putting together a content calendar, we’re hitting social goals that expand your business – whether that’s more revenue, more website traffic, increasing audience size or broadening brand awareness.
We’ve been working in content for more than a decade. That means we’ve been around since Facebook posts were called “wall posts.”
Most of those years were spent at agencies and in-house for brands, staying on top of every trend that came our way (remember the world record egg?).
We wanted everything we did and everyone we worked for to be rooted in meaning. We have seen the power of social media to grow movements, brands and effect radical change. We started Pomona so we could work with companies whose work we believe in—companies that are making people’s lives better.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Creating community is why I do what I do, which starts with our team. Business is about building and maintaining relationships, and that certainly applies to our team. Marketing agency employees are generally overworked and underpaid. They’re leveraged for high profits and quick turnaround, which is a quick path to burnout.
We believe in the radical idea that our employees should be interested in what they’re working on and staff projects accordingly. When you are interested in the industry, it makes the work better.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Charging more for services helps you serve your clients better. When I first started my agency I tried to have very cheap services. I wanted to be affordable to everyone, and I burned myself out in an instant. It wasn’t good for either one of us, so I had to recalibrate what we were giving and what the client was paying to find a sweet spot where we both feel like it’s a win-win. This allows our team to pull their full attention into the work, while also leaving space for giving extra when we have the capacity, which we do often.
