We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Devin Wiesler . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Devin below.
Devin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
At the time, I was doing a field verification for a commercial office in Downtown Orlando. My client was asking me if I knew any interior designers that would do her home. I told her I could recommend someone (not wanting to muddy the waters, as she was my client at the firm I was working at and her project was still in progress. She then said, “Ugh, I wish you could just do it, you’ve done a great job on my office and I don’t want to try and find someone else when I am happy with you. My friend and colleague who was with me during the survey gave me the look like, “go on… take it”. I’ve now completed 6 projects with her.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The arts and creativity have always been a part of my life from a very young age. I’ve always had the ability to visualize a space or a concept without even lifting a pencil. What sets me apart from others is my ability to listen to clients and make each project a true collaboration. My goal is to help my clients, who may not be as visual, able to see what I see. After practicing Interior Design for just under a decade, I’ve become a better listener and a creative problem solver.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals & repeat clients. Honestly, there’s nothing better than having your clients become your biggest fans & biggest advocate for your business. Their referrals mean so much to me and that’s honestly how I’ve gotten most of my jobs.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I grew up being an entrepreneur from an early age. I had a lemonade stand, I had a weekend neighborhood carwash business….anything I could do to make and save money I would try. I never lost sight of that entrepreneurial spirit. People would reach out to me all the time and ask me for small interior design jobs from the start. At first, I was giving away free advice because I didn’t value my time or my talent. Then the smaller projects of paint colors and pillows grew into living room design or kitchen renovations. It honestly kept growing. I would say yes to every opportunity that came my way that was a good fit for me. Eventually, the “side hustle” became too much for me with my day job. This was when I realized it was time to quit and go off on my own. I’m so glad I did- my only regret is that I wish I did it sooner.
