Sanaz, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I started practicing medicine over 20 years ago. In medical school, you learn about different diseases and different medications to help with either improving the condition or hopefully the cure. There was a lot of memorization about different medications. Over five years ago, I went to a conference seeking alternate ways of treatment, that’s when I got introduced to the book the China study. Reading that book made me change the way I eat and the way I approach medicine.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I moved from Iran to San Diego when I was 13 years old. Are you completed my undergrad studies at University of California San Diego. My interest was in mathematics and science. I fell in love with animal physiology which ultimately let me into seeking a courier in medicine. I went to Chicago medical school and finish my residency back in Ucsd. I chose family medicine residency where I would be able to treat the whole family and build long term relationships With my patients. I have been working with Sharp part-time For over 17 years. Being part-time has allowed me to focus on my daughters as well as my other passions. I’m very active on Instagram where I focus And promoting plant based medicine, exercising, stress management, and overall healthy living. My Instagram page is MKW-health.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
The nature of medicine has changed significantly. Being a primary care physician has become harder than ever. There’s a lot of demand from insurance companies as well as different institutions, which makes practicing medicine more challenging. I love what I do and I love the patient care. I still believe going to medicine Was the right call. I feel that I’m in a position where I can impact patient’s lives in many different ways. My focus has now changed To promoting health versus treating disease
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
To make it in medicine, you do have to work hard and put in a lot of hours. However, another important skill in being a good provider is improving on social skills. It’s very important to make patients feel comfortable and heard. It’s important for them to feel that they Are in charge of their lives and the decision-making. It’s also important to be very patient not everybody is Able to make a lot of changes in their lifestyles at the same time. You also have to be a great Teacher to simplify more complicated situations. You have to be able to think outside of the box and get creative in order to help people.
