We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Talon Grace Corbin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Talon Grace thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
So far and it’s a short story. Since art discovered me at the age of 54 am now 55 so you see it’s a short story, a short story with a huge impact with myself along with others. You see at 54 I thought most of my life was over when in fact it was just beginning just beginning for the first time of my life. I was and still am disabled with chronic spinal pain along with nerve pain and other things. I was an addict dealing with addiction trying to mask the past. Lots of trauma. Then while visiting an art studio they encourage me to try a hand at painting but with no art background I did not see what they was seeing. So with the encouragement of especially one artist I tried painting and not knowing how to draw I just started just feeling and putting paint to a surface and it just clicked and within my first year and painting almost everyday my life began to change and to my surprise my works where being noticed by others and the Metropolitan Arts Council ask me to do a exhibition and although I did not think my paintings where worthy of doing a exhibition again others saw what I could not and the birth of my first e exhibition was born and my only goal was for it to touch others others who themselves where going thru there hardships and “The Marks of A Simple Man” was created and done and it was a blessing to share tears with some of the people attending my first exhibition and touching others and that’s still my drive to touch and help people like me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Being self taught and still so new to the art scene am driven to be the best I can be and if that touches one soul then let it be. People who view my works will view parts of me parts of my struggles parts of my pain and what they will get is true emotional output and if that fits there taste then they can purchase apart of me and this circle from creation to someone being touched and if they purchase apart of me the dance is complete and if they don’t get my works then that’s ok it’s not for everyone.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
To touch others in a emotional way that’s it and if it makes a cool piece of art then that’s just icing on a very askewed cake.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Even though my traumas brought me to the brink of taken my on life art finding me gave me the outlet to overcome my addictions my mental health struggles and it gave me a purpose and that purpose must be fulfilled.
