Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pj Reed. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
PJ, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
There are so many heartwarming stories we could share. However this one is very personal to us. In 2018, my father passed away from cancer. Our team rallied up and held a fundraiser for us. We were on the other side of things this time. I believe this allows us to connect with the people we help. Although every story is different, we’ve been there. We will never forget this day when everyone came together for my family.

PJ, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Pandas Fight Against Cancer is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based here in Hampton Roads. Pandas Fight Against Cancer was founded in 2020 by PJ Reed, a former cancer caregiver. Our mission is to alleviate the hardships families dealing with cancer endure through awareness, fundraising, and community involvement. We raise awareness through our merchandise and our panda logo. The panda represents helping a family in need affected by cancer, it signifies strength, hope, and unity. We help to provide support to all cancer types and ages. We also put the fun in fundraising, some of our events include our Strike out Cancer bowling event, Annual charity golf tournament, Putt for a Cure putt-putt golf event, Toy drive, and more. The money we raise is used for any financial stressors and strain on living expenses for those affected by a cancer diagnosis. As an organization we work closely with Sentara hospitals, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, and the Virginia Oncology Associates. The relationships and connections that we create and sustain with our families and partnerships is very important to us. Once a panda, always a panda and no one fights alone!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being apart of the cancer community is the most empowering thing to witness. The survivors we meet and caregivers we come across are the definition of strength. Unfortunately there are times where we don’t get that happy ending and that can be very difficult. When we lose a loved one we have to remind ourselves to turn pain into purpose. This is why we do what we do. Cancer is a horrendous disease that affects the entire family unit. If we can just help a little bit in any way, that’s what we’re going to do.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
When it comes to starting a nonprofit and succeeding in this field, networking is definitely most helpful. There are so many amazing nonprofit organizations in this area alone. Really networking with them and supporting each other is what it’s all about. Leaning on those you meet when you’re unsure of certain aspects or have questions is imperative. We can learn from each other. Also networking and partnering with local business’ as well not just nonprofit’s.
