We recently connected with Adam Mackey and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Adam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents encouraged both analytical and creative thinking by supporting my interests in both science and arts. They created an environment where questioning and exploring ideas was welcomed, even when my creative expressions pushed boundaries – like when I wrote about reincarnation at my Catholic school. This dual nurturing of scientific rigor and creative freedom laid the foundation for my unique approach to storytelling, where I blend empirical observation with mystical exploration in works like ‘Holy Parrot’.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey interweaves two seemingly disparate paths – healing through chiropractic care and storytelling through novels and films. This unique combination allows me to explore human transformation from both physical and spiritual perspectives. I create stories that examine how we transcend our limitations, whether they’re physical, emotional, or spiritual.
My creative process is distinctive – I develop stories through multiple media, starting with a treatment, moving to a film script, and often expanding into a novel. This approach has led to award-winning works like ‘Mary Poser’ and ‘Holy Parrot’, plus films like ‘Le Saut De L’Ange’ shot in Corsica.
What sets my work apart is its focus on personal transformation through the lens of both science and spirituality. In ‘Holy Parrot’, for instance, I explore the tension between empirical evidence and mystical experience through the eyes of an Australian scientist encountering unexplainable phenomena.
Currently, I’m developing several projects, including ‘Bring Me To Life’, a story about alchemical transformation, and ‘Dreamer’, a short film releasing this year.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Non-creatives might find it puzzling that I often choose to complicate my creative process rather than simplify it. For instance, I write a film script before writing a novel – it would seem more straightforward to just write the novel. However, this complexity serves a purpose. The script forces me to think visually and focus on essential story points, while the novel allows me to explore the deeper internal landscapes of characters.
Another aspect that might seem counterintuitive is how I deliberately repeat a single song while writing to create a meditative state. This practice might appear obsessive to others, but it helps create a consistent emotional frequency that resonates with the story I’m telling. When writing ‘Bring Me To Life’, for example, Evanescence’s ‘Missing’ became a gateway to understanding my protagonist’s sense of isolation.
The most challenging concept might be how I view stories not just as entertainment but as vehicles for transformation. Like in chiropractic care, where an adjustment can release blocked energy, I believe stories can adjust our perspective and free us from mental constraints. This is why the premise ‘amor vincit omnia’ (love conquers all) appears consistently in my work – it’s not just a theme, but a key to personal transformation.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to create bridges between different ways of understanding human experience. Through my work, I aim to demonstrate how scientific thinking and mystical insight can coexist and complement each other rather than conflict. This goal emerged from my own experience of bridging the analytical world of chiropractic with the intuitive realm of storytelling.
Currently, I’m developing a ‘self worth roadmap’ that integrates these perspectives. It’s inspired by the concept of ‘Le Saut de L’Ange’ (The Angel’s Leap) – that moment when we must choose between remaining in our comfort zone or taking a leap into new possibilities. This project synthesizes principles from both my healing practice and creative work.
My novels and films serve as case studies in this mission. ‘Mary Poser’ explores anxiety and authenticity, while ‘Holy Parrot’ examines the intersection of material and mystical worldviews. Each story presents characters facing their own ‘Angel’s Leap’ moment, demonstrating how personal transformation occurs when we dare to integrate different aspects of our nature.
Ultimately, I want my work to serve as a catalyst for others’ growth, showing how embracing both rational and intuitive understanding can lead to more complete self-awareness and healing.
