We were lucky to catch up with Marcus Goins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marcus, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking a risk helped me so much more than waiting on anything to come to me. i was only doing photography in 2018 and everyone wanted me to do videos but I never was interested. One day I met a guy in Texas when I was on a trip with my friends and we became really good friends and he was teaching me the ropes of learning video every time we visited. So one day I was at home with like 300 dollars in my account and he hit me up asking if I wanted to come out there and work with him and I took the Risk so my video career started in Texas.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi my name is Marcus Goins also known as marxives. I never picked up a camera with the intention to have clients, it kind of just happened and I went along with it. It started with my family in 2018 while I was still in school and people seen me taking pics of them and started to be interested in my work. I’ve grown so much since then. I’m know a well known photographer and cinematographer. People normally come to marxives for things like, campaign shoots, portraits, brand shoots, weddings, I can literally do it all! What sets me apart from most people is my patience with my craft, I love shooting raw and bringing in these beautiful moody colors while keeping the edits simple and engaging. Just proud of how far I’ve come without even trying to.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started out without any knowledge with a camera or how to grow a page. I started my page in 2018 and I’ve gained a pretty consistent audience. I may not have the most followers but my audience is there and supports me. The best advice I can give you to grow your page is to be consistent. When I started i made sure I posted every two days for months straight and I started to get noticed, also the more work you do then the more word of mouth and boom that’s more followers. You can go to events and people will see you with a camera and get your socials. Just get out the house and be consistent!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love seeing the whole process and the aftermath. Being a creative is a long process but it’s so worth it. Setting up the lights, setting up my camera and making everything work in correlation is such a good feeling. It all goes back to making the Client happy with my skills. I love bringing someone else vision to life with my skills.
