Telana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
The craziest ( positive ) story I have to tell in barber career at the moment would be the time a very good client of mine still til this day , flew me out to Houston to cut his hair.
I remember it like it was yesterday , it was September 21st. 2023. At the time I was at a Airbnb in Arlington or Grand Prairie for the weekend because Beyoncé was on her Renaissance Tour & came to Dallas that weekend. After the concert we made our way back to the Airbnb & got ready to go out. When we got back to the house around 2-3am I got a call from my client. It threw me off & I thought to myself, what could he be calling me at this time for?
I answered & he said something along the line of – “I have a big conference here tomorrow & I’ve been traveling a lot but I need a haircut before tomorrow. If I buy you a flight can you come in the next few hours & cut my hair?’’ I literally froze but definitely not for long because my next words were YES ABSOLUTELY.
He asked me to send him the basic info needed to book a flight & 30 seconds later while on the same phone call I got a email notification. Flight booked. Leaves at 8am. I told my family I love you guys , but an opportunity I won’t turn down called. I said I’ll leave & come back the same day. I’ll literally be back in less than 6 hours. They understand completely & congratulated me.
After that I went to get my clippers & headed to the airport. Not too long after that I touched down , had a car waiting to take me to where he was staying. His haircut took about 15 minutes.
Next – he asked me how much I owed him & I said “You know I’m going to be honest. I’ve never done something like this & I truly appreciate you blessing me with an experience like this so early in my career. I appreciate you believing in me & id like a opportunity like this again sometime in the future , so because I haven’t came up with a price for traveling to other states , throw a number & I’ll tell you If I can work with it. He said a number higher than I ball parked in my head & I said deal.
He paid me & I was on my way back to the airport. Smiling ear to ear just thankful for life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a person that yearns for evolution & unity of humanity. In business I create an atmosphere where it’s clear that I stand for change of the mind , approach & appearance. I’m most proud of my standard & what I expect out of the individuals that sit in my chair. A lot of things I may suggest or discuss don’t just make you better client , but possibly a better man/woman . A better father/mother . A better friend. A better son/daughter.
There are certain things I won’t do around children. I don’t play music that spoil or rot the brain due to what’s being said. I believe we have too many poor examples out here for children that affect the way they talk , think & act. We have gotten away from demanding that they are respectful not only us but other adults ( teachers of any kind mainly) & society. More than not lacking manners. I don’t allow people to not respect me & my time. With that , I’m molding them to respect other peoples time. I’m molding them to possess the ability to practice time management skills that they will use other places in life – for the rest of their life is they ever want to be successful.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being a very well rounded barber in multiple categories. I’m not perfect at all , but I will say I give 110% when I am standing up behind the chair dealing with a client. This includes being able to hold a conversation with new clients & old clients from all walks of life. Young , Middle Aged or Older . All races- Hispanic , African American, Caucasian, African , Asian , Indian etc. You have to create the ability to connect about things.
Here are a list of more things I believe helped me build :
Professional not matter what at all time.
Great communication.
On time
Keeping a clean environment
Creating a environment friendly for single mothers
Creating a appropriate environment for kids
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Clients that tell. You don’t have a clientele unless you have clients that tell other individuals about you.
