We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Spencer Rampersad. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Spencer below.
Alright, Spencer thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
In this industry trends seem to come every so often but fazes out very quickly. Example the “fitted” look lasted for while until history repeated itself and the “baggy” look has once again become a trend.
Spencer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I come from humble beginnings, my family is from Trinidad and Tobago and migrated to the US back in the 70s and 80s. I was born in Brooklyn Ny and moved to New Jersey at age 12. My love for style/fashion comes from my parents, while growing up we didn’t have much but their appearance was always flawless. As a young teen I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and have owned businesses prior to this such as a mobile detailing company, recording studios and my last venture an event space. I started Rich Living at the end of 2019 just looking to have another side hustle but it soon turned into something bigger than I imagined. I now offer men’s and woman’s clothing and soon will be producing kids clothing as well. I also offer 1 of 1 pieces and willing to collaborate with other brands. My drive is my kids, I have 3 boys that I will be leaving this business to.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Well yes! Right now in this present time! I was recently let go from a job I’ve been at for over 10 years. Now I’ve always said I’d to like to focus on my clothing business full time but with having a family and bills not having a career could be detrimental. I believe in God and also believe everything happens for a reason. As of now I’ve been putting efforts and focus solely into my brand and have been making bigger strides.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Through my 5 years in business I’ve built relationships with many manufacturers and have weeded out the bad ones and what quality I’m looking for. I started pressing my own stuff but it was very time consuming and as you will learn time is money (literally). I’ve been scammed before trying to find a manufacturer online but that’s part of the game. Now I have a domestic and overseas manufacturer that is trusted and provides great quality products.
