We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Benjamin Nolot a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Benjamin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project for me so far is my first feature documentary, Nefarious: Merchant of Souls. I learned about human trafficking for the first time in early 2007 and was desparate to do something about it. My work on Nefarious took 4 years and has ended up having an impact bigger than I ever coiuld have dreamed.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in Southern California dreaming of being a filmmaker. In my early 20’s I also started feeling compelled to do something to make a difference in the world. When I discovered the existence of human trafficking I was able to marry my two passions together. I have been using film to fight trafficking ever since. The thing that sets my work with Exodus Cry apart is the emphasis on addressing systemic issues that underly trafficking, pulling it up by the root. I am most proud of how are films and campaigns have brought about real world change.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a filmmaker for me, is being able to create a transformational experience for viewers that ultimately helps bring about real-world change.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Ending human trafficking
