We recently connected with Haiden Bohm and have shared our conversation below.
Haiden, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Buttercream Boy started organically from something I was already doing—making birthday cakes for my friends. I’ve always loved cooking and hosting, blending creativity with food, and cakes became a natural extension of that. Turning it into a business felt like the right move because I truly enjoy every part of the process, from baking to decorating to seeing people’s reactions when they get their cake.
My love for unique, homemade cakes comes from my mom, who always made birthday cakes from scratch every year, just like her mom did for her. I actually have my Nana’s Betty Crocker cake kit that was passed down to my mom, so baking has always felt like something special and personal to me.
The name ‘Buttercream Boy’ came naturally—it’s a nod to the buttercream frosting I use for all my cakes, and ‘Boy’ is something my friends and I say to each other all the time, so it just felt right.
The biggest part of launching my business was getting my name out there. Pop-ups in Venice helped introduce people to my cakes, and working with brands like Frankie’s Bikinis and Réalisation Par has been such a fun way to grow. But what I love most is collaborating with my customers to bring their vision to life. Every cake tells a story, whether it’s for a birthday, wedding, or special event, and I love being part of those moments. Seeing Buttercream Boy take on a life of its own has been exciting, and I’m so grateful for how it’s all unfolded.
Haiden, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m the founder of Buttercream Boy, a cake business based in Venice, where I create unique, custom cakes for birthdays, weddings, events, and brand collaborations. I bake everything homemade in my kitchen thats around 25 sq feet, people are always shocked by this but I am used to it – I love my little kitchen and spend most of my day in there. I’ve always loved cooking and hosting, blending creativity with food, and baking became the perfect way to express that. What started as making birthday cakes for my friends turned into something bigger when I realized how much joy it brought me—not just the baking, but the artistry and the experience of making something special for someone’s important moments.
Buttercream Boy is all about bringing creative visions to life through cakes. I work closely with my clients—whether it’s individuals celebrating special moments or brands looking for something unique—to design cakes that not only taste amazing but also look beautiful and feel personal. Every cake tells a story, and I love being part of those celebrations.
What sets Buttercream Boy apart is that I don’t just make cakes—I create edible art that feels effortless, fresh, and stylish. I focus on high-quality ingredients, thoughtful details, and a balance of elegance and playfulness. My cakes aren’t overly fussy or traditional; they have a modern, organic feel that stands out.
For anyone discovering Buttercream Boy for the first time, I want them to know that this isn’t just a business for me—it’s something I truly love. Whether it’s a simple birthday cake or an elaborate wedding piece, I put my heart into every order. My goal is always to make something that feels special, personal, and, of course, delicious!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building my audience on social media has been a mix of strategy, creativity, and organic growth. I also do freelance social media on the side, so I have experience in marketing and strategy, which has definitely helped me be intentional about how I present Buttercream Boy online.
I built my audience through a combination of working with bigger brands, leveraging TikTok, and hosting pop-ups in Los Angeles. Collaborating with brands like Frankie’s Bikinis and Réalisation Par helped expose my cakes to a wider audience, and their tags and reposts brought in new followers who were genuinely interested in my work. TikTok has been another huge tool—it allows me to showcase my cakes in a fun, dynamic way while reaching people beyond just my immediate circle. Pop-ups have also been key because they give people an in-person experience with my brand, and when they share their cakes online, it creates a ripple effect.
Beyond that, I’ve been very intentional about making my social media feel personal and engaging. I don’t just post cake photos—I share the process, behind-the-scenes moments, and the excitement that goes into each order. Engaging with my audience is also important to me, whether it’s responding to comments, resharing customer posts, or asking for input on cake designs. Social media is about building a community, not just a following.
For anyone just starting to buld their social media presence, my advice would be… be consistent but don’t force it! I always think quality over quantity when I am making content to post. Engage with your community, collaborate and connect with other creatives, brands, or local/small businesses to expand you reach and build your network. Finally, stay true to your style – lean into what makes you and your brand unique and share the process!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has definitely been a mix of social media and word-of-mouth from past cakes I’ve made. A lot of people find me through Instagram and TikTok, whether it’s from my posts, client tags, or brand collaborations. When someone shares a Buttercream Boy cake at their event, it naturally introduces my work to a new audience, and that organic growth has been incredible.
I love working with new clients and taking on new projects because every cake is different. Each order is a chance to create something unique, whether it’s a playful birthday cake, an elegant wedding design, or a creative collaboration with a brand. It keeps things exciting and allows me to constantly push my creativity.
Seeing how people connect with my cakes—whether they’ve been following me online or were referred by a past client—reminds me why I started this business in the first place. It’s all about making something special for each person and bringing their vision to life in a way that feels personal and memorable.
